Emotions are clearly high, so for once, Data steps out of his helper role and takes on the brunt of organizing the after-trial gathering. He's seen enough of them by now to know what's what. He's also seen more than enough in this particular trial to decide that the bar, while possibly being the most logical location, may be distressing to some! So instead, we're gonna do something different. Data will deliver invitations, that sort of look like a computer printed them, to each of the rooms:]

There are no decorations, but there are some snack selections from the buffet and the cafe, depending on what you want, and a tray or two of mixed drinks courtesy of Jimmy Buffett. Data and Parker are both here. If you're sad, you may pet Parker (probably). If you're too depressed to make your own fancy sundae, Data will do it for you (definitely).]

Lalli is just going to quietly watch Zero work until Zero speaks to him though. He's interested in what Zero is doing and won't interrupt until the end.]

[He considers how to word what's on his mind. Because he wants to tell Zero, Zero seems like a smart guy who can help him with this.]

I talked to Davy Jones, earlier in the week.

Did you? Was there anything of interest the two of you discussed?

I have a better understanding of what he does. Because I do the same thing as him.

[He. Actually does not. But this is how Lalli understands what Davy Jones told him.]

Just without the boats. Or a kraken.

...Do you make a habit of ferrying the souls of the dead?

[silentscout]

I watch them, to make sure they make it to the other side. And ghosts who can't pass on, I say prayers and help cleanse them so they can pass on.

The swan is what takes their souls and guides them, but I watch from the living side of things to make sure they don't get lost along the way.

I see--we don't have an equivalent in my world, so this is unknown territory for me.

Ah.

Well, if he's here, then he's not guiding souls. So it's important to get him free of the captain so he can go back to his job. Dead who linger for too long become ghosts, and ghosts can hurt the living.

I was speaking on this before, but it makes sense he would essentially have some jurisdiction here. We are at sea and-

Wait. If Jones isn't taking spirits to the afterlife, then Sylvando and the others...where are they right now?

[He shrugs.]

If I had my powers I could find them immediately, I can see and hear ghosts. But they're probably with Davy Jones, since none of us have been attacked yet.

That's just what I mean--if they're still around, perhaps all hope isn't lost yet.

[Zero paused what he was doing in favor of thinking over this line of logic carefully.]

...Of course, there's the matter of bodies to address, but perhaps some world has the magic or technology to see to that.

[Lalli seems a bit concerned by that thought.]

The dead are dead. Trying to bring them back will only bring misfortune. But we can say goodbye to their souls before they pass on.

...Perhaps you're right.

...but at the same time, there might be different rules in other worlds. Maybe there is something that can be done, as long as their souls are safe.

I've come to realize that if nothing else, other worlds don't operate on anything resembling what I know as 'logic'.

I believe it stands to reason that the impossible in one realm is simple in another.

Maybe. It would be nice if they could come back.

[He just only has half-a-plan currently.]

Indeed we can; we need only survive long enough to reach him.

[It's half-baked, but he's going to work on it.]

You can. I have no intention to act on anything Jack comes up with, and my priority is on our real enemy.

Nothing he can offer will really help anyway. We have to take what we actually need.

Exactly. Plumeria was right; he won't act in our best interests, and anything he can offer is either bluffing or outright bait founded on half-truths.

Mhmm. We just need time to find a way to him.
