Week 1

Good morning, New Rapture. A new day is dawning.

There may not be much light to differentiate the days here, but the lights of the part of the city you're in change enough by the clock that you can almost believe there's a sun somewhere. It looks like Mayor Fontaine has no intention of going back on his deal, and for the time being? You're all stuck here. But there's plenty to do, and... maybe not plenty to see, but there's enough. There's something, at any rate.

Especially if you're willing to look beyond the surface.

And if you spend enough time around others, you might find something neat!

No matter what, it's time to start getting to know your fellow captives. You might be here a while.

[Jonathan blinks in surprise at the familiarity, but he smiles at Brett when he realizes that it's him.]

It is! I have no idea if the Mayor or his assistance is familiar with shorthand themselves, but I figured it wouldn't hurt in the event that they ever get a hold of my writings.

I sort of know it, but that looks like a different system. Which makes sense.

[He figures, between Jonathan being British and from like two hundred years ago, it's reasonable that they'd be working with different shorthands!]

I've been writing things down too, but I hadn't thought to code any of it. That's a good idea.

Thank you kindly. I've been doing this for a while, and, well, I unfortunately have experience with my captors discovering my messages.

[He trails off for a moment, before brushing it off.]

I would love to see your shorthand too, if you remember much of it! It might be nice to vary my shorthand.

[Plus he's just a sucker for learning.]

...sure.

[That other bit is Noted, but maybe we can circle back around to it. Brett takes out his own notebook, flipping to a clean page - looks like he's already filled several others. He'll start writing out the alphabet, as well as he recalls it.]

I learned this back in school. But pretty much everyone just records interviews, these days. Like - [Man, he wishes he had a better sense of like, the history of technology?] - like a gramophone...?

[Jonathan watches as Brett writes the alphabet.]

Oh yes! I've heard about people using those to record interviews for future reference without needing a transcriber. It's fascinating how technology's advanced! Has most written works been replaced by recordings?

Not all of it. But a lot of what is still written has moved online. That's...

[He drums his pen against the paper for a second. How can he explain this to a Victorian guy?]

...it's on screens, like those TVs the Mayor spoke on the other day. Here. [He's finished; he carefully rips out the page and hands it over.]
