Good morning, New Rapture. A new day is dawning.

There may not be much light to differentiate the days here, but the lights of the part of the city you're in change enough by the clock that you can almost believe there's a sun somewhere. It looks like Mayor Fontaine has no intention of going back on his deal, and for the time being? You're all stuck here. But there's plenty to do, and... maybe not plenty to see, but there's enough. There's something, at any rate.

Especially if you're willing to look beyond the surface.

And if you spend enough time around others, you might find something neat!

No matter what, it's time to start getting to know your fellow captives. You might be here a while.

[For one long moment, Joy just looks off into the distance blankly. Then she seems to remember that she's been asked a question and shrugs.]

Not a huge fan of everything bagels. It's on my profile and everything.

Ohh, is this what that’s about? I’m guessing the everything’s all the stuff on top.

[He picks at a bit of topping, examines it, and pops it in his mouth, too. He could get used to this, actually.]

Is it another Earth thing?

It's on almost all of the Earths I've been to, so I guess you could say that.

[Entirely possible the everything bagel is such a universal constant because she created it, but she tries not to think about that sort of thing too often.]

The only ones that don't have everything bagels are the ones that don't have bagels in the first place.

Huh. [Om nom nom.] How have you been to so many Earths? Is that normal?

[allatonce]

Not really. My—where I'm from, we invented a way to travel between universes and, uh. That's the research I was assisting with.

["Research assistant" is still a bullshit explanation of her job, but whatever.]

Wow. Sounds like impressive work.

[A lot of things do, when you haven't even heard of electricity.]

It's one of those things that's impressive, but it really takes a toll on you.

[She sounds almost thirty when she says that, instead of ambiguously twenties.]

I used to love it but now? Now I'm not so sure.

Mmm. I get that.

[No, Obi, you probably don't.]

Have you considered a change in career? Or taking a break?

[She bursts into laughter. Sorry, Obi, it's not you. It's the mere idea of "taking a break."]

I don't think you can just quit when you're the foremost expert in something, unfortunately.

[That sure is a way to put it.]

Whaaat? That stinks! Even royalty get to retire or take sabbaticals!

[Timeline jumpers, unionize for paid vacation!]

Technically, I guess I could train my replacement and retire like my mom but... I still wouldn't be able to leave for a couple years.

[On account of there's like... maybe one or two other people on the level of her and her mom.]

Oof. That's too bad. Hope something works out for you sooner or later.

[He chews another bite of bagel, swallows, and asks:]

Whatcha think you might like to do instead, if you could?

[Huh. That's a question that she's never really considered. The multiverse is such a vast place and to a certain extent, Joy wants to try it all. Still.]

I don't know. Cottagecore shit, probably? Grow a vegetable garden and have a pig, maybe.

Simple country living! From what I hear, that can be a hard but rewarding life. Never tried it myself, of course.

[He has almost none of the skills to make it viable.]

Yeah. I had a pet pig back home, so I was already halfway there. I don't know, I just think working with your hands is fulfilling.
