Week 1

Good morning, New Rapture. A new day is dawning.

There may not be much light to differentiate the days here, but the lights of the part of the city you're in change enough by the clock that you can almost believe there's a sun somewhere. It looks like Mayor Fontaine has no intention of going back on his deal, and for the time being? You're all stuck here. But there's plenty to do, and... maybe not plenty to see, but there's enough. There's something, at any rate.

Especially if you're willing to look beyond the surface.

And if you spend enough time around others, you might find something neat!

No matter what, it's time to start getting to know your fellow captives. You might be here a while.

It is a little much in there, isn't it? [She laughs a little, light.] I keep feeling as if I'm somewhere I'm not supposed to be.

Ah-- I mean, we are, but... You understand what I mean.

[Like they should be getting kicked out, or something.]

It's a little more calming here.

Yeah, I get it. It almost makes me feel worse - the cage didn't need any gilding.

[Maybe he should be grateful that it's not worse, that at least they aren't suffering right now...but that's the exact impulse Brett hates. He shouldn't be grateful!]

I've been spending a lot more time out in nature lately. I recently inherited an old cottage out in the mountains.

Oh? So you're more of an outdoorsy sort, huh?

This situation is even more unfortunate then, I suppose. We can't even open any windows...

[Brett laughs.]

Ohhh, no. If there's anything I've learned, it's that there's a big difference between living near the woods and really knowing how to handle them. I like the outdoors when it's safe.

[He glances at the sea outside.]

But I would feel a lot better if we were on land.

I live in the city, so I don't really have any particular connection to nature myself. It sounds nice, though. Even just living near them.

...It's a shame about the circumstances. I don't really mind being underwater that much.

Yeah, my real home's in Chicago. It's...also a city. We've got the Great Lakes, but I've never spent all that much time near the ocean. It's...well, I don't think I would normally mind, but this makes me nervous.

Oh, in Illinois, right? Mm, I'm familiar. I live in Tokyo myself. We do have nature if you look for it, but I never really have any reason to visit. I mostly just end up seeing the same few places every day.

But being in a place like this... It's kind of like a giant aquarium.

Oh! Yeah, sure, I've heard of Tokyo!

[It's a lot more exciting now that he's come to realize he doesn't recognize anything from most peoples' worlds!]

Yeah. But if the glass breaks in an aquarium, nobody gets hurt.

The fish would probably disagree with that.

[she says like her own aquarium has any of those lol]

...But I understand your point, yes.
