Week 1

Good morning, New Rapture. A new day is dawning.

There may not be much light to differentiate the days here, but the lights of the part of the city you're in change enough by the clock that you can almost believe there's a sun somewhere. It looks like Mayor Fontaine has no intention of going back on his deal, and for the time being? You're all stuck here. But there's plenty to do, and... maybe not plenty to see, but there's enough. There's something, at any rate.

Especially if you're willing to look beyond the surface.

And if you spend enough time around others, you might find something neat!

No matter what, it's time to start getting to know your fellow captives. You might be here a while.

[Mmm, good enough - Brett smiles.]

It's definitely overwhelming. And I haven't even traveled that much!
howveryglib: he's lookin' maybe a little bored. maybe. (i'd rather be driving a mech honestly)

Well, I suppose there is no reason not to discuss our homelands, then. Tell me, what is yours like?

Oh - well, I live in the city of Chicago. My partner and I both travel a lot for work, so I spend a lot of time on the road too. Not long ago, I inherited an old family cottage out in the mountains - that's where I was right before this happened. It's remote, ten hours from the nearest small town. Nothing but the woods between us.

[...but, even if only in his own head, he's straying off-topic.]

We don't have magic, or dragons, or anything like everyone else has talked about. It's pretty normal. Maybe "mundane" is the word I should use.
howveryglib: gaius with a hand up to his chin, thinking deep thoughts (yeah... tacos sound great for dinner.)

Ah, I see. [that's malms, right, he guesses it's malms.] Do you have vehicles, or do you rely on beasts of burden?

...I do find myself wondering what the world would be like if no magic existed, now that you have brought up the concept. We Garleans are somewhat unique in that almost none of our population are able to manipulate aether without the use of magitek, so that has led to many difficulties for us throughout our history.

We've got cars - vehicles. It's not that far into town that way, assuming the roads are good. The guy who lived there before me didn't have a car, though, he'd always just walk it.

[Twenty miles roundtrip! Dang!]

Oh, I'm...sorry to hear that. [He doesn't quite get all the terms, but it sounds like it sucks.] I don't really know what to tell you. I don't know what the world would be like with magic. We rely on technology, I guess.
howveryglib: gaius looking off to the right... (please do not discuss the chicken thing.)

Ah, no, we do have cars in Garlemald, at the very least, though they are not nearly as common in the provinces. I… suppose walking would be the only option for many, though I would think at that point someone would invest in a horse or a chocobo or whatever is appropriate.

But yes, I presume that is how it would be. I do prefer the idea of having both, personally, as I believe there are opportunities present in such a situation that I do not believe would be possible were there only one or the other.

There'd have to be. I feel like we get by okay, but we also don't have any idea what we could be missing out on. Like - can you use magic as a clean energy source?
howveryglib: surely. (at least it's almost over.)

[personal profile] howveryglib 2022-06-18 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hm. I am not entirely certain what definition of clean we are working with here, because aetherial interactions can have unpredictable effects regardless of what you are working with… and in any case, I have subordinates who know much more about that sort of thing than I do, and I tend to defer to their expertise. Particularly my tribunus laticlavius, who will explain in great detail how he knows precisely how to solve every energy problem known to man and some that are not.
