Funeral Service for Adaman and Hodaka Morishima

[ An hour or two after the first trial's end, Hild and the Undertaker set out to invite as many people as possible to the Restaurant for the funerals of our dearly departed friends.

Why the restaurant of all places? Because there aren't enough chairs and tables elsewhere.

Indeed, some of the tables have been moved against the wall to make room for the seats. The chairs have been set up in four rows of six, like an improvised theater or a church. To the side, a small buffet has been set up courtesy of Obi, Mafuyu, and Hild. As for the main event? Two tables have been set up and decorated in black fabric and white flowers. In lieu of a live viewing, two drawings referenced from the profiles have been set up in the center of funeral wreaths... They're not the best, due to the artist's handicaps, but it does look like Adaman and Hodaka at least.]

[Jonathan flinches, and looks over at Obi in surprise. He quickly pulls out his handkerchief and starts dabbing at his tears.]

Sorry Obi, I had no idea you were here.

[kninja]

[He manages a small, mournful smile.]

No apology necessary, Your Honor. It's not like I announced myself.

[After a moment, he unclips the small cape he wears on his shoulder and wraps it around Jonathan instead.]

Can't sleep, huh.

[hotpaprika]

[The gesture gently surprises Jonathan, but he quickly settles into the warmth and softness of the cape.]

I'm afraid not. I could not close my eyes without seeing witnessing the horror those poor children had to go through. How I desperately wished I could have done something to stop any of this from happening.

[He exhales gently.]

I assume you are in a similar situation as me to be up at this hour?

[kninja]

[He looks rueful for a moment, then closes his eyes and sighs.]

...I think I'm gonna make it a point to be up at this hour from now on.

[hotpaprika]

[He can't argue, as much as he recognizes how dangerous that idea is. Two minors have just perished because the adults weren't more careful.

Instead, he places a hand on Obi's.]

... Perhaps I should join you on that. I cannot fight, but I could at least attempt to diffuse a dangerous situation, and... like I said in the trial, I would much rather I die than the children.

[kninja]

[The touch seems to surprise Obi, but he turns serious at Jonathan's words, leaning in to look him dead in the eyes.]

And I would much rather no more of us die at all. I don't like thinking about one life's worth versus another, Your Honor. I'd rather fight to keep all of 'em, tooth and nail.

[Gently:]

Can you understand that?

[hotpaprika]

[A part of him wants to argue that Fontaine could always do a similar motive where lives are at stake, or point out that he would rather he die than more children.

But... that's not the point of what Obi's telling him, and he knows it.

Still, he squeezes Obi's hand lightly.]

I... I can, but I hope you understand that I still do not want you to do this alone. If you were to get into trouble, I want you to be able to to get you out of it, or at least call for help. If you were alone, it would take hours for anything to realize that anything was wrong.

And... if there were more of us, it could detract the more desperate people from doing anything rash.

[kninja]

Haha. [His laughter's nowhere near as bright as before.] I won't argue if you wanna set up some kind of regular patrol. It's a good idea. We could talk it over with the others, see if there's some kind of shift schedule that works for those interested.

[He gives Jonathan's hand a small squeeze back.]

Thanks for looking out for me. You're right, it isn't something anyone should do on their own.

[hotpaprika]

[Jonathan finds himself missing Obi's cheerful laugh from last week.]

Perhaps we could set up another meeting to discuss such things. It's clear that we could use another one after all of this. I... I know how I have acted today, but I do not want to give up when there are still so many people that need to be saved.

And it's the least I could do. I deeply care about you and don't think I could forgive yourself if I did not look after you like you have for me.

[kninja]

[That at least cheers him up a little.]

Well, good. 'Cause I'm not giving up on you, either, Your Honor.

[He retrieves his hand so he can give Jonathan a playful nudge with his elbow.]

For now, you gotta get yourself back up to full strength. Eat something and try to get some sleep, okay? I'll walk you back.

[hotpaprika]

[He gives Obi a small, genuine smile in return.]

Thank you, Obi.

[His smile quickly turns sheepish, however.]

Yes, food would do me some good right now. I'm afraid that I had not eaten since Thursday night, and only had a little to drink throughout the day.

[Which... whoops.]

[kninja]

Well, there's plenty of food in the...

[What is it called.]

...fridgers. [Nailed it.] I may have gone a little overboard cooking earlier. We can brew some fresh tea to go with it so it's not all cold.

[hotpaprika]

Oh, the ice box?

[He smiles fondly at Obi.]

That sounds lovely right now. It's a shame I couldn't eat your food fresh, but I will happily take some hot tea and good food right now.

[kninja]

Well then.

[Up he pops once more to a standing position and offers Jonathan a hand.]

Let's get you fed and off to bed.

[Jonathan takes his hand, feeling absolutely safe.]
