[That was, in Rose's opinion, even worse than last week. Any loss of life is an awful waste, but for it all to come of some horrible accident...

This week, she doesn't retreat back to her room. She knows now that the people here, or at least enough of them, like to gather after these experiences. Many of the Crystal Gems were the same way; she remembers their post-battle huddles well. It's not a party, really, but...it's good to be together. To have friends around. Maybe, to remember those who were lost.

So this time, she'll go to the cafeteria herself and request some food for everyone. It's just basic snacks, the kind of human food she knows well enough to ask for. There's some hot chocolate provided, too. She definitely knows people enjoy that. It doesn't take too long, since she isn't making most of it, and then she goes to invite everybody she can find.

She doesn't slip any notes underneath doors, for the people she doesn't happen across. Some Crystal Gems didn't join the groups, or maybe did after one battle but not another. Sometimes they wanted to be alone. She never really understood that...but it wasn't her place to tell them otherwise. Weren't they all about freedom?

Everybody probably knows something like this is going to happen again, anyway. It's their choice to come.]

That's -- [She stops. Snaps another gumdrop off the gingerbread house.] Well, he does seem to fixate on using his machines to recreate impossible magic. It might well fit.

It's not an impossible concept by any means.

[After all, what was a Holy Grail War if not that exactly?]

Though what he seeks to accomplish, I have no power to even begin to guess.

Harvesting power, possibly. But then, we just discussed that no one can access magic or whatever abilities they have here, so that would be done already without the bloodshed if that were his aim. The key's got to be somewhere with those research logs.

That much is reasonable to assume. I would want to assume Angel might know, yet his most recent treatment of her tells me a very different set of circumstances is likely.

You suspect she actually believed she might be able to stop anyone from killing, then? Not that she's only saying that?

What I believe is that any man who literally puppets his subordinate is not one who shares his secrets with them.

Apparently not. What she does know, she slips up with as a matter of course, anyway. As if she keeps forgetting what's public knowledge and what isn't. Surely he accounted for that.

I would presume so as well. He already struck me as someone who would be cautious around a careless assistant, even before that charming little incident with the puppetry. I imagine she knows little of use to us.

Do you suppose he chose her because he could control her, then? After all, they do say she was part machine even before all this.

That is a highly likely possibility, if not the exact reason itself.

It makes sense. Even he's got to have limits to what he can do, even if he would prefer everyone think otherwise.
