So far, good news! You've managed to avoid killing! A week has passed in the facility, but how many more are there to go until one of you tries out Rule Seven? I mean.... we know, but.

No new areas just yet, it remains you guys and yours here for now. Well, and Angel, but again - you don't exactly see her unless you want to. It's more than a little lonely... maybe someone ought to shake things up.

Ostensibly. That is ostensibly still a leech.

[It's gross! And just kinda wiggling its way up the glass squelchily like it does not have a single damn to give today, probably because it doesn't.]

It's something my employers were running tests on. No idea why it's here.

...I see. Your employers were certainly...creative, at any rate.

What exactly is it supposed to be able to do?

[Lif's eyes just kind of...stay on the leech. Watch it just go about it's 'no thoughts, head empty' life, probably. But you know, he'll bite. Maybe it won't be like opening Pandora's Box, or it'll just be a lot of 'congratulations, it's fucking nothing'!]

It's not supposed to be able to do anything, I'm pretty sure. We run tests on things like this sometimes if we suspect they're spreading disease. Or if they're immune to certain diseases, like this thing is, we analyze them to try to figure out why that might be.

[...Sort of, anyway.]

Basically, it's great at fighting off something that's killing a lot of people. It just absorbs the illness and adapts to it instead of getting sick, so there's something in it that we want to try to understand.

Granted, that particular virus also makes them huge. We're...not sure why it does that, either.

[...Oh, that. Actually makes far more sense than his first thought, that they were some sort of defense against the zombies y'all got going on here. Though in hindsight, he's not exactly sure what a leech would be able to do in that sort of situation.

Maybe one day he'll stop jumping to the assumption that everything has a combat application.]

A potential use against the disease, then. That's certainly a sensible application of it's apparent capabilities. I admit I am surprised that leeches, of all things would be able to adapt to such a thing...

[Like seriously, look at these things. How has natural selection not just...

...Okay considering the size, they got pretty fucked up, but still.]

It's certainly an interesting effect, but rather disturbing all the same. I've heard that they tend to be menaces at such a small size--I can't imagine what sort of trouble they'd be like this.

Will you be needing any assistance in getting it down?

[He does have his sword that maybe they can just. Gently...encourage it down with...so it doesn't fall on someone's head...]

...Yeah, eventually. It's either we get it, or I get either a chair or a giant woman.

It should be fine for now, it's just exploring a bit. As long as it decides it doesn't want to bite anybody or divebomb their heads from on high or something, it'll be okay. It's not really too smart.

[Oh my god, don't make Rose deal with this? What has she ever done to you. He'll take one for the team just to make sure nobody else potentially has to deal with this.

...If you manage to get Jasper to even agree, then more power to you.

Still, Lif's look does go back to the leech at that, and there's something resembling amusement in his expression as he looks at it.]

...It really doesn't look like it has a single thought going on in it's head. I'm almost willing to say it's the luckiest out of all of us.

[On one hand, obviously, but on the other, it kind of is amusing. Here they are, stuck down here with the only way out being murder, and there's this thing. Crawling up the walls with no idea what the hell.]

[That leech seriously just does not know what the fuck, it's kind of delightful.]

I was never too crazy about them when we were working with them. I get where they're useful to our research and all, but they're pretty gross and kind of hard to work with. But it's almost nice to see the stupid thing, just because it really obviously does not give a damn.

[Seriously, it is? Not a care in the world but attempting to get to sweet, sweet freedom.]

I can hardly blame you. They're pesky enough when they're tiny, and at this size? I can certainly understand why you'd want nothing to do with them.

It is nice, however. To have something familiar, in an unfamiliar place.

Have you gotten anything weird out of the machine? Not like...alive-weird, but like your-personal-belongings weird.

A couple of things. I received a book from my world that doesn't seem to have any sort of effect here, and Aela received my sword from the machine.

[Lif will look at Birkin, though, after he says that.]

I could show you a picture of my wife and kid, if you want to see them.

[On one hand, it's definitely a little more than fucked up that the Professor would shove such a precious item in the vending machine, and Lif is...honestly a little surprised Birkin would trust him with that much.

And yet, on the other hand, this is perhaps the most gentle Lif has ever gotten, in both tone and expression. So yeah, when you're ready, dude.]

[It's just the matter of getting the locket out of his coat pocket; it's large and circular, and it's easy enough to get open. The picture inside is some kind of variation on this.

He'll pass it over so Lif can get a look at it; he seems easy enough.]

Obviously, I married a bit above my station.

[Lif will gladly take a look when Birkin opens up the locket, and...honestly, despite his lack of face and not so great ability to express much, there's really no denying how soft his look gets as he looks at the three of them together.]

...I can certainly understand why you would say that.

[Annette's definitely pretty as all hell, and Sherry's absolutely adorable? But all together, they really do make for an adorable family.]

Annette's every bit as wonderful as you described--and Sherry is quite adorable as well. You're an incredibly lucky man, to have such a wonderful family.

I know I am.

[He does, really. Weird though the whole thing gets sometimes.]

I'm sure they're doing fine. Annette is capable, she'll make sure Sherry's all right.

[Lif nods his head in agreement; that's valid as hell, okay.]

I have no doubts about that. It's all the more reason to hope that the Professor gets bored of this entire exercise soon.
