WEEK 8

Good morning, passengers. Happy Sunday. Happy New Year.

Your numbers have officially dropped to single digits. One of you managed to kill the first of the major living obstacles to your collective freedom. A ghost or demon or something nearly killed you. It was a weird week.

The cruise continues on, roller coaster back up and running as ever, arcade free and clear of coins. The last free floor of the ship is open, as well as part of the top deck with... well, something you might expect to see way more on a cruise ship than anything else here. One way or another, you get a feeling you can't shake - things are going to end soon.

No rain yet, but the clouds are closing in fast above you. A cold wind blows during the night, sending the ship gently rocking. Around midnight or so, if you head to the deck, you can hear thunder in the distance.

[Constantine is hanging out in the buffet, cramming food into his mouth. Today's breakfast of choice is a mug of English breakfast tea and a bagel smothered in cream cheese. He hears Data speak while he's in the middle of chewing, and he glances up, mouth full as he replies--]

Eh? Sure. Just make sure you get my good side, alright?

[Any photograph Data might take is probably going to look unflattering as hell. He licks a wayward bit of cream cheese from his thumb and wipes his hand on his coat.]

What's this about, then? Tryin' to keep a record?

Sure. Gimme a sec to line it up....

[Fun fact--I just realized that Flayn is a solid foot smaller than Constantine based on her profile! Constantine positions the camera best he can, leaning in close to Flayn and crouching down slightly so that both of their faces can get in the shot.]

Smile for the camera, love.

[Click! Whrrrrrr......

Out comes a Polaroid, which Constantine promptly hands over to Flayn to watch as it develops. It's probably tilted and slightly off-center, but it's...fine?]

There you go! See how that looks.

Hm. I do not know... I think it is interesting to have the ability to get a spontaneous image rather than something... posed, for lack of a better word, given we only have portraits and such back in my world.

Just the sorts of things children draw, from the ones I have seen. Well, I suppose since they generally live underwater, there are more fish, wiggly circles, and seaweed than people, animals, and grass, but the principle is more or less the same.

[Even if they're apparently monsters, Flayn would like to meet them. This is probably a bad idea.]

Are there any other beings like them that come from the sea, where you are from?

[Yeager hasn't exactly been the most social since the motive, but then again, how many of us have been? He's restlessly wandering the ship in the evening when he hears the sound of the violin, and he swings by to join Data. For awhile he simply hangs out nearby, watching and listening - and occasionally glancing over his shoulder. For the most part he's trying to be as cheerful as usual, but... well, it's pretty obvious that he's not having a great time with this one either.]

Your playing is magnificent. It... really is helping with the... that. All of that.

[Vague handwave, which is supposed to indicate the things we're hearing, but that really says nothing of value.]

But she stands on her tiptoes as much as she can so Constantine doesn't have to crouch too much, and gives a very subdued version of her usual smile. She takes the polaroid when given to her, waiting, waiting...]

...Oh my goodness, that is us!

[It's a little slanted, but it looks like Constantine got 'em both in frame!]

[Nine people left out of twenty-six! All still standing...perhaps not strong, but still standing! What else can one ask of them all, really. Having decided the materials to use in his relatively silly attempt for preparing for the future, Filbo takes a sewing needle -- how he can even hold it is a mystery, geez, but he's doing it]

You know, each one of us deserve a vacation once we're safe and at home! Right? Just a few days to not worry before returning to our normal lives.

[Even if it's just lazing around at home for a few days, really, hah]

I can already picture how it'd be like if I tried to use this machine: stitches all across the fabric, nothing really joined together, and somehow a few knots all over the place.

[Better to be go with what he's comfortable, Jasper is right. Where are the needles, again? Welp, time to find them]

I see. You prefer candid photography. Many artists consider it to be more honest and emotional than the posed variety.

[Which are, of course, things that always interest Data - he lifts his own camera and snaps a photograph of Jasper in return.]

That would be nice. Though I cannot enjoy a vacation as others would, I do find it useful to have time to pursue personal projects, without the potential interruption of my duties. As a bridge officer, I am always on call even when I am not technically on duty.

Nothing wrong with that, if you ask me! I know if I was forced to work for that thing, I'd reach out to literally anyone to get me out of the job.

Did you have any big projects before coming here? I mean, you really have a lot of talents in art, were you gonna work on anything like that?

See? With a little practice, you'll be able to take your own pictures like this.

[He tilts his head to the side, an almost fond expression on his face.]

I have written a sub-routine to identify the sounds and designate them irrelevant, but that does not mean I do not hear them. It only means that a portion of my processing power is continuously devoted to them.

Nothin' wrong with that, of course. I'm just saying that he's probably got his own interests, not just helpin' us out of the kindness of his heart. And, of course, it shows that we all gotta do our part to go against....

[Dramatic pause.]

The Man.

[He flings the dart towards the board. It lands just on the edge.]

[Eh, that's fine, they've been talking about candid photography lately. Which is why Data does not immediately move to take the photo - he feels permission is important, but the two can co-exist.]

I suppose it could be that, in part. Though of course, any record we only begin to keep now will necessarily be incomplete. [...] Still, it would be good to have photographs of those who remain.

Suppose it would.

[If Data's not done taking pictures, Constantine will straighten up a bit and try to look...at least a little more refined. But 'refined' isn't really a word used to describe John Constantine, and it certainly won't be used now.]

Hey, y'know, these might've been more helpful to record evidence and the like in previous weeks. Not that we needed any help, but....

[Data's got the gist. It's unnecessary to know exactly what the others are hearing, he thinks.]

I find the distraction of playing helpful, although perhaps not as much so as I had hoped. Though I cannot be emotionally hurt by this, it is still...a disruption.

It's a disruption that's strange enough to be happening to you in the first place. I can see where that would be a little... odd.

The worst are any that involve any kind of supernatural component - those are just complete failures if they don't have otherwise useful sharp bits. ]
