WEEK 8

Good morning, passengers. Happy Sunday. Happy New Year.

Your numbers have officially dropped to single digits. One of you managed to kill the first of the major living obstacles to your collective freedom. A ghost or demon or something nearly killed you. It was a weird week.

The cruise continues on, roller coaster back up and running as ever, arcade free and clear of coins. The last free floor of the ship is open, as well as part of the top deck with... well, something you might expect to see way more on a cruise ship than anything else here. One way or another, you get a feeling you can't shake - things are going to end soon.

No rain yet, but the clouds are closing in fast above you. A cold wind blows during the night, sending the ship gently rocking. Around midnight or so, if you head to the deck, you can hear thunder in the distance.

SUNDAY | MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY

[ ooc: Welcome to week 8, everyone! Remember to turn in AC here and coins for regains over here! If you wish to get in contact with the npcs, Davy Jones is over here, and "The Captain" is over here! And as requested, profiles are accessible here. ]

Nothin' wrong with that, of course. I'm just saying that he's probably got his own interests, not just helpin' us out of the kindness of his heart. And, of course, it shows that we all gotta do our part to go against....

[Dramatic pause.]

The Man.

[He flings the dart towards the board. It lands just on the edge.]
ahelpingpaw: (so I tried eating this purple flower.)

[That dramatic pause is amazing, hah. Filbo gets his darts ready, trying to stop chuckling before he gets his turn]

The Man!

[Go against The Man, nice. Rage against the Machine]

You know, I'm pretty sure given my probably former job I qualified as the Man, somehow. Does that count as working from the inside against the Man?

[Even though he's referring to his job as the mayor in past tense, somehow he feels...okay. Like he has come to terms with the likely possibility that's over and done with. Sure feels well enough to be joking about it, at least!]

[Constantine nods sagely.]

The Man.

[He repeats it, just to really drive the point home.]

Hmmm. I'd say that qualifies--s'long as you were in a position to support the people, not push down on them. And given what I know about you, Filbo, you seem to be more inclined to the former.

[He gives Filbo a reassuring smile.]
ahelpingpaw: (I could barely move!)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-17 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
You can be sure supporting them is all I'd have ever wanted.

[He definitely means it wholeheartedly]

You have been all your life about fighting the Man, no? I mean, I could tell from the music -- all that, uh, all that fury didn't come from nowhere!

[Well, it sure is a way of interpreting the way the punk music from Constantine's band made him feel like he accidentally tased himself with those electrical things from the vending machine]

[Constantine grins, rubbing his chin.]

Yeah, I suppose so. I mean, when you grow up in working-class Liverpool, you never run out of grievances against the Man. Long-standing employees gettin' laid off every other day, sharply-dressed businessmen hardly sparing the homeless so much as a second glance...that kind of thing.

[He's not gonna go into more, but Filbo can probably connect the dots.]

So, I learned from when I was young that if you don't like the rules, you don't have to play by them. S'why I started learning magic.
ahelpingpaw: (I can't make it on my own.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-17 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[Filbo throws, aiming for the bullseye but instead hitting three inches above it. Oh well]

You're...not wrong. Make your own rules, I guess. I wouldn't have guessed turning to magic would be the way to do that, though. It almost seems like it made everything around you far more complicated.

[Not that Constantine's life wasn't going to be tough enough already, judging by the things he was saying. Working-class Liverpool sound like a difficult life already]

[Constantine rubs the back of his neck.]

Well, when you're a kid stuck in a terrible home where nothing is under your control, being able to grab your fate by the throat and change it is extremely tempting.

[To tear the hurt from your own soul and memories. To punish those that wronged you and your sister. To bring what a child would consider justice to the unjust world.]

Though, fate's a funny thing. Even if I didn't pick up magic at a young age, it probably would've swept around and caught me in its claws later, anyways. My entire family line's descended from a bunch of powerful magicians and tricksters.
ahelpingpaw: (so I tried eating this purple flower.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-17 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
So that's what you mean when you say once you get acquainted with magic it's hard to get away from it?

[Not exactly his words, Filbo, but the spirit is there, at least. If his family line was deep into magic of course sooner or later it'd reach Constantine and mess with his life. Filbo throws a dart and misses the board altogether by less than an inch, welp]

[personal profile] scouserer 2021-03-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[Constantine nods.]

Yep. More or less. It kind of ripples out and has a habit of affecting those around you, too.

[Fate has never been kind to him! Ever! This is a fact! Magic is just one big pyramid scheme in the making. He snorts as the dart hits the wall and bounces off onto the ground.]

Sometimes, I envy people who are able to live regular lives. But normalcy was never really an option for me, so may as well embrace it so that other people can have that normal.
ahelpingpaw: (and then I fell in a hole.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-17 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really noble of you. It's--it's kinda inspiring, honestly.

[Far more altruistic than he'd have given Constantine credit weeks ago. He really is kind of cynical, thinks Filbo while the last dart hits the very edge of the bullseye, but he really is a noble enough guy at heart]

It must be ridiculous that even when you're brought into a whole new world and in this situation, it still is full of magic and...all this nonsense with voodoo.

[Magic is there for you all the time, huh, Constantine]
scouserer: (02)

[personal profile] scouserer 2021-03-18 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Constantine lets out a short laugh. Noble? Now that's a word he hasn't heard used to describe him in years. He could correct Filbo--tell him how many stupid, stupid mistakes he's made for his own gain or to save his own skin.

But he doesn't. He'd rather Filbo think of him like this for now.]

Ridiculous is certainly one word for it. But this is just standard fare with what I face on a daily basis.

[Uh...which means most of the things he face are probably equally terrible, if not worse!]
ahelpingpaw: (But then I threw up)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-18 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
[There's so many people on this boat Filbo knows only the best sides of, hah. It's hilarious somehow]

Then your everyday life is exhausting. I have seen all this about magic and curses and everything for just around a month and I already know I want to never see any of it ever again.

[Magica talking to him about that sort of thing with accursed dummies, bloody revenge murals, castles in the shape of your face, and all that? Also helped make it all seem like a lot of trouble]

You really deserve a break. Maybe if everything ends on a high note you could try to take a break for a few days somewhere magic won't torment you. I'd offer you my world but, uh, I dunno if you'd be able to go back to yours? And also a member of a new sapient species appearing all of a sudden would be the news of the decade, so that wouldn't really be a vacation for you.

[Unless he's fine spending a few days in Filbo's home with no possibility of going outside, in which case there's no objection from Filbo, really]

[That's just the natural magic of Filbo Fiddlepie, (Former) Mayor of Snaxburg! A sort of dry, tired smile tugs on the corners of Constantine's mouth.]

Believe me, what I wouldn't give for a proper night's rest for the first time in fifty years.

[It's always been nightmares, magical crises, and more. He's gotten used to it, sure, but just because he's gotten used to it doesn't mean it's any more pleasant. And, as much as he hates to admit it, he's not getting any younger. He leans against the billiards table.]

And, hey, maybe a vacation with a bunch of fuzzy Grumpuses...Grumpus?...is just what I need. Sure beats a cruise ship filled with murder, or someone angrily shouting my name in a local pub to try and square up....
ahelpingpaw: (A-and by the time I dragged myself)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-18 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
You'd be hounded by the press. There'd be so many photos of you in the media for a while, and even more once you leave the world and return home. A friend of mine would probably ask you very strange questions about yourself for the sake of science.

[Filbo sounds amused]
