And with the sweat of your brow...
Fun Fact: Did you know that if the multiverse is real, there could be an almost infinite square mileage of completely unexplored ocean out there?
No reason.
...
You wake in one of 25 rooms with a sense of unease that doesn't quite track with how nice the accommodations are. Maybe it has something to do with the giant window leading out to the sea. The temperature is low, which might make you wish you had woken up under the luxurious covers instead of atop them. The lights, too, are low. But next to your bed is a small personal radio, and it's playing a song for you. There's also a small note printed on folded cardstock next to it.
Dear Prospective Citizen,
Welcome to the Helios Suites at New Rapture. The time should currently be 12:00 PM. Please take a moment to get your bearings and become acquainted with your new environment, then meet in the hotel lobby at 1:30 PM sharp for an orientation with Mayor Fontaine.
With only that for guidance, there's only the one thing to do: get out there and start exploring... well, it's hardly a full city, but it's something! And in the halls (or on the wall of your suite or the lobby), you very well may find up to 24 other captives.
What you do until your meeting with Mayor Fontaine, well... that's up to you. Every room certainly gives you something to talk about.
No reason.

[ But he trails off. That was the plan before. But now, with what he's done, is there...really a place left for him?
For a moment, Hodaka bristled. But now, his shoulders sag a little. Hina-san.
In a tone that's more downtrodden than before, he replies: ] ...I don't want to stay here. It's creepy.

[Is that...an attempt to cheer him up? Maybe]

[ Is...he pouting? Maybe a little. He's a little more serious, a moment later. ]
People aren't s'pposed to be here. In the sea, or...places like it.

Legends such as Atlantis or Lemuria exist. Some versions say these are tales of apocalyptic disasters, while others believe these are utopias and that finding them would bring a new age for humanity.
[Aiba looks around, judgmental]
Although if those two look anything like this place, I don't understand the interest in them. It's thoroughly underwhelming.

[ The hairs on Hodaka's neck start to stand on end. He doesn't regret it. He could never regret it. He made his choice. But to hear it like that...
He clears his throat. Don't think about it. It doesn't matter. Only she matters. ]
Mmm- you- I don't...think this is a legend, ma'am. Uh. M-miss...? I'm sorry, I can't remember...
[ He's only read the profiles once, you see! ]

[She stops looking around]
Had you ever heard about a place like this one ever before? An underwater city of this complexity is unheard of to me.
[Even in her futuristic canon, yup. Although it's futuristic only about a few select things]

[ But, if it never stops— ]

[There's a chance this will end up in murder, after all]

[ Because this woman seems to know what she's doing. ]
Ah- my name... It's Hodaka.
