And with the sweat of your brow...

Fun Fact: Did you know that if the multiverse is real, there could be an almost infinite square mileage of completely unexplored ocean out there?

No reason.

...

You wake in one of 25 rooms with a sense of unease that doesn't quite track with how nice the accommodations are. Maybe it has something to do with the giant window leading out to the sea. The temperature is low, which might make you wish you had woken up under the luxurious covers instead of atop them. The lights, too, are low. But next to your bed is a small personal radio, and it's playing a song for you. There's also a small note printed on folded cardstock next to it.

Dear Prospective Citizen,

Welcome to the Helios Suites at New Rapture. The time should currently be 12:00 PM. Please take a moment to get your bearings and become acquainted with your new environment, then meet in the hotel lobby at 1:30 PM sharp for an orientation with Mayor Fontaine.

With only that for guidance, there's only the one thing to do: get out there and start exploring... well, it's hardly a full city, but it's something! And in the halls (or on the wall of your suite or the lobby), you very well may find up to 24 other captives.

What you do until your meeting with Mayor Fontaine, well... that's up to you. Every room certainly gives you something to talk about.

[...yeah like.

he likes things lookin' cool, but...]

Those prone to excess will very frequently overindulge in excess. Admittedly, 'tis not the sort of look I would have expected from a place of this sort...

[Oh...this one looks like an intimidating customer. Nevertheless, though, Adaman nods his head a bit.]

It's a strange concept, truly. But perhaps that is due to not being so used to excess; usually we make due with what we have, where I come from. But I do see where it could lead to such things...

[Though, he seems rather annoyed with it.]

Truly, if they've been given this much by almighty Sinnoh's blessing, to see it wasted so frivolously and...garishly, it truly puts a bad taste in my mouth.

But truly, I agree. Though much about this place is unexpected; how did they get all of this under...what appears to be water?

...they are natural processes, not anything worth attributing to any sort of "god."

[he is so fucking done with gods. all of them. but there are more pressing matters.]

Regardless, I am sure it is an impressive work of engineering. I do not know if anyone of the present age would be able to create something like this, but it does not seem out of the realm of possibility for Allag or some other civilization from ages past.

[...Don't pick a fight with the atheist, don't pick a fight with the atheist, don't pick a fight with the atheist--Adaman very notably tenses at Gaius's words, but--]

This is beyond anything that could be conceived of in Hisui. With or without the assistance of PokΓ©mon, it feels like an almost impossible marvel.

[don't pick a fight with the atheist, don't--]

But I must disagree with you! It is through almighty Sinnoh that all things are possible, after all. Through Their help and blessing, it is what allows these 'natural processes' to march on.

[he's just. he's just saying!! oh my god boy, no--]

...I confess, however, that I am unfamiliar with the likes of...Allag, or anything of the such. A place of your own ancient history?

[personal profile] howveryglib 2022-06-13 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
Of the beings commonly worshiped as gods of which I am aware, they have ever done the complete opposite of what you suggest. I somehow find myself doubting that your eikon or... Pokemon or whatever you happen to call them manages to be the exception.

[he's probably not going to convince the kid even if he doesn't actually seem tempered.

...

but. well. neither did midas, at least until he thought about it in retrospect. he's definitely got to keep an eye on this one. maybe he can explain allag, though... he seems to have interests other than his damn eikon, at the very least.]

...In any case, yes, Allag is an ancient civilization from millennia past that possessed technology far beyond what we currently possess.

[personal profile] timegazer 2022-06-13 03:18 pm (UTC)(link)
That's--!

[Adaman is...honestly perfectly ready to fight on this, eyes widening in shock. There's a rational part of him that says he should de-escalate, that sounds distinctly like his sister. And yet...]

...I am sorry that these 'eikons', as you call them, seem to have failed you so. But I can assure you that almighty Sinnoh has done nothing but protect the people--of my clan, the Pearl, and those outside of it! I will not accept this slander.

[Adaman's arms cross, feeling his point made unless Gaius really wants this to come to an argument, but...]

...Tell me of them. What sort of technology did they create?

That is what they all think. You are better served standing on your own feet instead of falling before those of your gods.

[FEET

FEET

FEET]

...In any case. They were responsible for all manner of advances in engineering and weaponry, both wonderful and terrible. Their propensity for warfare was only matched by their hubris.

[...thinking about it.

...]

Of course, they destroyed themselves long ago, but many of their works survive to some extent.

[BRUH, THE FUCK IS YOUR DAMAGE--

Honestly, Adaman's expression is just kind of. Set into a permanently annoyed scowl at that. Truthfully he doesn't know why he's wasting his time trying to convince this old geezer, and yet--

It's the talk about warfare that gets Adaman to pause.]

They would use their knowledge--their marvelous knowledge, simply to create better ways to wage war upon one another?

[Like. Holy shit. He's not unfamiliar to the idea, really, but...]

What sort of items have survived to this day, then? I confess; Hisui doesn't have anything of the sort.
howveryglib: chatting about something. (it's cool we hashed it out offscreen.)

[personal profile] howveryglib 2022-06-15 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[someday you'll unlock his traumatic backstory. well someone will. maybe.

and really it's cid's traumatic backstory he's kind of adjacent to...]

Initially, it was to wage war upon others, and after a certain point, it was to maintain their power. Such is the nature of history.

[...]

It is a given to say that their weapons were left behind. Great warmachina designed to combat eikons, false moons designed to contain them, and who knows aught else... I suppose many of their documents are left behind, as well, encoded in devices known as tomestones.
timegazer: (πŸ’Ž Two.)

[personal profile] timegazer 2022-06-16 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[...Yeah, Adaman's expression just kind of. Very quickly shifts to something disgusted as Gaius continues to go on. The fuck is the matter with these people?]

So such terrible and disastrous weapons have survived to this day...absolutely horrific. Did they leave behind anything that might prove actually useful to a peaceful world?

[because clearly anything meant to fight gods is bad???]

I believe doing away with false gods was a perfectly good start, all things considered.

[LIKE……]

Pah! Sounds like you consider every god a false one! I can hardly blame them for being so cross with you if this is how you respond to them in general!

[LIKE???

Even if they were to exist, man would have no need of them. Do you have a mind of your own, or has your god decided to do the thinking for you?
timegazer: (πŸ’Ž Nine.)

[personal profile] timegazer 2022-06-18 04:19 pm (UTC)(link)
[Something about that gets Adaman to tense up--he knows damn well what it is, but is he going to admit weakness in front of this guy? Absolutely not.]

Of course I do! Almighty Sinnoh does not control the mind of it's denizens--we worship them because they have proven time and time again to protect us for generations! If we did not, then we would likely be wiped out by many of the dangerous wild PokΓ©mon that live around us!

There is a need for gods, at least in my own world, and I am dreadfully sorry that these 'eikons' seem to have failed you so. But I will not sit here and listen to you insult our faith and protector!

β€œFailed” is a generous term for it. That implies they were good for anything in the first place. If you have any intention of summoning your god here…

[he trails off Meaningfully.]

The absolute last thing we need is anyone getting tempered.

Tempered--what are you talking about?!

Hmph. So either your god is merciful enough to allow you free will or you are not even aware that it has taken hold of your mind.
timegazer: (πŸ’Ž Two.)

[personal profile] timegazer 2022-06-20 05:03 pm (UTC)(link)
[DUDE, THE FUCK]

We all have our own free will, under Almighty Sinnoh! I sincerely doubt that we would be allowed to have as colorful of personalities as I have seen, if that were the case...

[argument in favor of almighty sinnoh's mercy: have you considered melli's personality though--]

I am genuinely not sure if that is a good marker or not, considering.
