WEEK 4

Another trial, another week, and still you're probably running lower on answers than you'd like. And on people - you lost three since last Sunday. By the end of this week, you'll have been here for nearly a full month, yet still the days crawl on.

You wake up Sunday, again with no memory of Saturday, but this time with a simple message on your devices: You may resume requesting items, if you like. Enjoy. Guess it really was just a stealth motive after all, but at least it's being communicated that it's over! That's something, at least.

And when you leave your rooms on Sunday, there's another new area to explore! This one is... certainly more ambitious in its construction than the last one, to say the least. But hey, you have a pretty neat place to host parties, if you feel so inclined! That's... fun...

Hey, you gotta find the fun in situations like this where you can! Silver linings, right?

[These missing Saturdays keep wreaking hell on Therion's nocturnal preferences, so by Thursday, he's approaching something like crepuscular behavior. Very early in the morning, before the lights even rise, he's in the library. It doesn't take him long to find what he wants in the How To Crime section, but he spends longer looking through the international culture shelves.

In the evening, he sprawls lengthwise on one of the couches in the lounge. He's got one book open next to him and another propped up against his bent leg as backing for paper. Throughout the evening, he refers to the open book, writes something, and checks his work--looks down, writes, and checks again. Every now and then, he switches hands. He keeps at it even after lights out. Maybe he wants to check out that Channel 42 thing Birkin transcribed.]

Busy at work there, Therion?

[ With the amount of coffee she's been drinking since the start of this thing, it's a surprise that they haven't given Ema her own Keurig yet. Nonetheless, with mug in hand, she watches Therion take his notes...though she has the decency not to give in to her curiosity and take a peek. ]

Might be easier if you use a desk, you know.

Thought about it. But I want to be here for that... conversation Dr. Birkin overheard. It's something to do with this, right?

[He gestures at the television. That has "channels," right? The only other channel he can think of is that weird fake stream in the room with the pool and the chutes.]

So I'm just keeping my hands busy while I wait. Can't stay cooped up in my quarters all the damn time, much as I'd like to.

Ah, right...it plays at 9:49, right?

[ Now that he mentions it, she's a little interested too, but...well, when he looks at the time on her phone, she realizes that they have more than a bit of time to kill. ]

It happens every night at the same time, you think?

[The way Therion's brows rise a bit, he maybe did not know it plays at 9:49. All he was able to deduce from the message was that probably has to do with the television. Thank you for translating military time for a dumbass, Ema.]

It's what'd make sense. The clue didn't mention a day.

If that's the case, it's probably an automatic thing. I can't imagine someone is sitting around somewhere and broadcasting it manually every day at the same time...

[ But obviously, that only tells them so much... ]

So... it was happening even before he found the message?

I can't say for sure, but that seems likely, if you ask me. It's not like any of us would have known to check that channel at that time beforehand. And there may even be more, and we just wouldn't know how to find them other than by chance...

[He looks at the television.]

We know about one, now. We could try to check all of them.

The thing is, this message plays on channel 42, right? We don't know how many channels there are, but even if we assume there are only 42? We'd have to sit here on one channel and wait for something to come up, all day or night, before trying the next one. It'd take forever.

Whoever is playing these messages, they want them to be found. It'd be much faster to keep poking around in here and find more clues than hope that we stumble upon it through dumb luck.

...Guess so. Well, if we ever run out of places to search...

[He looks down at his book and painstakingly writes another letter on his paper.]

Personally, I'd say it's a last resort. Can I ask how you're killing the time, there? I'd be lying if I said I wasn't getting a bit antsy over by the bar...

[He pauses, then lifts the paper to show her.]

Teaching myself those... Greek letters.

[There they are, uppercase and lower: Α α, Β β, Γ γ, Δ δ...

Seems once he fills a whole row, he repeats it with his other hand. He's very attentive to detail, even if it's just the alphabet.]

Anna told me they're used in scholarly work, but she didn't explain much more than that.

[Sly rises with normal hours like a normal raccoon man. And he still finds time to head down to the library for reasons only he really knows, coffee in hand because he's gotta break some kind of rule in here.]

Reading up about places you've never been to, huh?

[He scanned the international culture shelves himself, a couple weeks ago.]

There's some pretty good material in there.

Sort of. I'm looking for something on "Greek."

[And the book he already has tucked under his arm from the crime section is on confidence tricks. He pauses. There's one more thing he's hoping to find. He didn't know where to start looking, but with Sly here...]

Hey. Are you from Earth, too?

I'm from a Earth, if that's what you're asking.

[A earth for furries and furry crimes.]

And I actually don't think I've been to Greece. They've got nice things to steal, though. I'm sure.

Every place has nice things to steal, if you know where to look.

I'm asking because of that... Pandora story. The one Della brought to the meeting last week. Nobody talked about it then, so... I thought it might be a tale most of you already know. Is it from Earth?

[Well, there's only one really obvious thing that could be.]

You mean, Pandora's box? I've heard that story.

I haven't.

[Y'all need to check your Modern Earth privilege, seriously.]

Well... what do you want to know about it?

What kind of book would I find it in?

[Shrugs!]

Greek Mythology? [Actually... he'll join him at the shelves, peering at them.] They kind of had a lot of myths like Pandora's box. Of course, maybe they're not really as mythological as I thought.

[Multiple worlds and all that. Aha! He pulls out a book, Mythologies of the world and passes it over.]

But that still doesn't really answer why you're looking into this.

[Sly is a gentleman and a scholar of a thief. Therion takes it and immediately starts flipping through the pages.]

It was hidden for us to find--or for someone to find, anyway. Don't you think that means it's important?

[Nah, that's his ancestor, Thaddeus Winslow Cooper III. Sly's just the regular king of charming.]

Well... when Pandora's box opens, all the worst things come out of it.

[He pauses in his rifling.]

So... what. Should we look for a box like that?
