WEEK 5

That's three murders now - and this last trial got more than slightly out of hand. It looks like you might be in for another tough week... or at least, maybe that's just the refusal of this place to change too much. You lose Saturday again, but maybe six-day weeks are starting to feel normal by now. Who knows? The cycle of day and night continues apace, changing so little.

Speaking of change, though, there's a new area to look through, the biggest and most complex yet. And the end of one wing of the facility, from the looks of it - though you can probably guess where more areas might start to open up.

And speaking of opening up (segues!), this week if you're out particularly late, you might sometimes see Angel out and about! So hey, maybe change is on the horizon.

Just gotta hope it's a change for the better, don't you?

[ She's smiling, but she doesn't look happy. ]

You caught the way he sounded after the execution, right?

Yeah, I did. Less aggressively himself than usual for some reason. You think he's second-guessing this whole thing?

Not exactly. I mean, if he was, wouldn't he have started a lot sooner? But I don't know what else you could possibly take out of it.

Maybe I'd have a better idea if he would actually talk back, instead of being a coward.

[ ...Yes, that last part is addressed over her shoulder, at the video screen. ]

Yeah, they tend to be like that. One of the guys I worked for only addressed us over the PA system; we had to hear from him daily, so this is actually an improvement.

Seriously? At that point, he should've just put a daily bulletin on your desk instead.

He must've been a real character for you to compare him to the Professor, though.

No, it was more some...weird repetitive thing that he made us do daily. Same thing, every day on a regular basis. It was more creepy than anything.

I never met him in person, but he did some...interesting stuff. A fair amount of experiments that were over on the wrong side of ethical.

Stuff you worked on? Ah, not that I'm... necessarily judging. It depends on what it was.

Occasionally. I'm not going to claim that the stuff I did was entirely level when I was working for him.

Although now you're just making me morbidly curious about what your standards are for what's acceptable.

What do you mean, morbidly? [ harrumph ] My standards are as high as they can be while still being practical. "Don't drag civilians into it" is good enough for hard-and-fast rules, right?

Not by a lot of people's standards, but sure.

A lot of people don't know what it's like to fight a regime with more money and power than the rest of the planet put together.

You can breathe, you know. All I'm saying is that the Geneva Conventions exist.

Isn't that stuff mostly just common sense? [ this-sign-won't-stop-me-because-I-can't-read.jpg ] Torture and whatever else is a waste of time, and I don't have time to waste.

Besides, shouldn't I be the one asking you that question? How did we get on the topic of my life?

It was somewhere around the implication that certain ethics violations are acceptable, I'm fairly sure.

Well, obviously you think so, too! And that wasn't the point I was trying to make, anyway. What I meant was just... It's not like everyone I've worked with has been a perfect angel. They were still my teammates and allies. And as long as we're both working together instead of trying to kill each other, I can say the same about you, right?

Exactly. I'm pretty invested in trying to figure all of this out by now, and I think it's in everyone's best interest to keep the advantage of numbers as high as we can. Discipline is unity, unity is power. One of the few sources of it we've got.

[mouflon]

I don't think any of us want another trial at this point. It makes me wonder what he plans to pull this week...

[ She's feeling a little subtweeted right now, though... ]

I hope you know that Rhea and I have already agreed that we need to work together, though. [ You know, after their fight during the first trial. It clearly has not actually helped. ] I can't stand her, but it's not like I consider her my enemy or anything.

You're doing better than I am, then.

As far as I'm concerned, she made her bed and she can lie in it. It's not really of any consequence to me whether she throws herself out of the group, like she's been doing since we got here.

[mouflon]

[ Rin tries not to smile at that! But she fails. ]

Just wanted to let you know that I don't plan to start any fights. [ So far as Rin is concerned, every argument she's had with Rhea is entirely Rhea's fault, so! ] Like you said, we need to mount a united front here, and I don't intend to make myself a burden on the rest of the group.

[I mean, is she wrong, though? As far as he's concerned, Rin starts fights with Rhea because Rhea is being obstinate about something stupid, so...]

I didn't think you would, honestly. You seem one of the least likely to, from what I've seen.
