WEEK 5

That's three murders now - and this last trial got more than slightly out of hand. It looks like you might be in for another tough week... or at least, maybe that's just the refusal of this place to change too much. You lose Saturday again, but maybe six-day weeks are starting to feel normal by now. Who knows? The cycle of day and night continues apace, changing so little.

Speaking of change, though, there's a new area to look through, the biggest and most complex yet. And the end of one wing of the facility, from the looks of it - though you can probably guess where more areas might start to open up.

And speaking of opening up (segues!), this week if you're out particularly late, you might sometimes see Angel out and about! So hey, maybe change is on the horizon.

Just gotta hope it's a change for the better, don't you?

What are they?

They're mostly each associated with a certain Type, and some Pokemon can evolve when exposed to them. Eevee's the most well-known, since it can evolve in multiple different ways depending on which stone it's exposed to.

So they're...not alive?

They're not. [A pause.] I'm pretty sure they're not. I've never heard of any of them animating spontaneously, at least.

[Look, with all the living rocks around now she's going to take the possibility a bit more seriously.]

[Hey, she'll take Nira's word, it's just that she has certain associations with glowing gemstones.]

None of these really look exactly like Gems. Even if they were, I'm not sure why they wouldn't form. This case wouldn't stop them.

Yeah, probably not. The Professor wouldn't want to give any of us more potential allies. Is there any way to tell, other than just waiting for them to form?

Gems are fairly regularly formed. You would never see a Ruby with a cut like that, for example.

[she indicates, idk, a ruby that's not cut like a steven universe ruby]

Huh, you actually form like that? Usually you need someone who knows about gem-crafting to actually get regular cuts out of raw gemstone.

It's not like we just randomly form from the ground. It's all overseen by Kindergarten technicians.

[ladygeryon]

[There's a momentary blink of confusion at the usage of the word "Kindergarten" there, before Nira nods.] I guess that makes sense...is that part of what the Diamonds want resources for as well?

Mmm-hmmm. To make more Gems, to replace all the people they kill.

[It isn't that Rose is opposed to the idea of making new Gems at all - far from it. There's plenty of planets without any life out there. But she doesn't think there needs to be such a desperate rush to expand, except that they can't take care of the people they already have.]

[ladygeryon]

[A sigh.] Gems are pretty much immortal, right? If they didn't keep conquering planets, would they even need to make more?

[lovelikeyou]

We are, if nothing happens to us.

[That.....hm.]

I can...I understand wanting to make new life. To get to know them, and spend time with them, and take care of them. But the Diamonds don't do any of that.

[ladygeryon]

Sounds accurate from what you've told me about them...and if they wanted to do that, they shouldn't create enough Gems to drain a planet at once. It takes time to get to know and look after someone individually, after all.

They don't care about Gems as individuals. Gems aren't even really allowed to be individuals.

[ladygeryon]

Yeah, got that impression from what you said. That they can only do what they're "made for" and the Diamonds decide what they're supposed to be for. [She doesn't phrase it as a question because it sounds obvious enough.]

[Rose nods.]

I'm guessing that actually probably makes them pretty inefficient too, if they don't teach Gems how to deal with things outside their assigned jobs.
