WEEK 5

That's three murders now - and this last trial got more than slightly out of hand. It looks like you might be in for another tough week... or at least, maybe that's just the refusal of this place to change too much. You lose Saturday again, but maybe six-day weeks are starting to feel normal by now. Who knows? The cycle of day and night continues apace, changing so little.

Speaking of change, though, there's a new area to look through, the biggest and most complex yet. And the end of one wing of the facility, from the looks of it - though you can probably guess where more areas might start to open up.

And speaking of opening up (segues!), this week if you're out particularly late, you might sometimes see Angel out and about! So hey, maybe change is on the horizon.

Just gotta hope it's a change for the better, don't you?

Getting a book...? I don't exactly have as much work to do at night.

So I've just coincidentally never seen you out and about before? [ hmph ] What do you even do in there, besides listen to people come and complain to you for things?

I run surveillance and monitor the facility in case I need to respond to power or equipment issues. Late at night, I only really have to pay full attention to one of those things, so I can uh. "Leave my cage."

[mouflon]

So when do you usually come out? [ She makes the question sound as accusatory as it reasonably can. ] None of that tells me why I've never even heard of you wandering before now.

[ She shrugs. ]

After lights out, at least. I haven't even run into more than a couple people total, so it's not surprising it isn't super common knowledge. I know a lot of you don't exactly want to run into me, or you'd be coming to my office.

[mouflon]

I think it's less that we don't want to see you, and more that we don't want to come crawling to you on the off-chance you'll be nice. I'm sure you wouldn't want to rub elbows with your jailer, would you?

Trust me, I'm not blaming anyone for not wanting to see me. But I can promise you that at the very least I don't spend all my time... twirling my mustache and laughing at you all.

[mouflon]

[ W- Was that a joke? Rin narrows her eyes. ]

...Fine. A different question, then, since I might as well make use of you while you're here.

You mentioned monitoring the power. Is it just electricity, or is there something else?

[ It might have been! ]

Well electricity's the big one... I also have to monitor pressure sensors in case of structural damage, but thankfully we haven't had to worry about anything like that.

[mouflon]

That isn't what I asked. Is electricity the only power running through the walls?

[ she is determined to get an answer to this suspicion!!! ]

I... don't follow. What other kind of power would you be talking about?

[mouflon]

[ mmm >:I ]

Maybe I was wrong, then. I thought... there might be something circulating through the walls that's keeping our abilities suppressed.

[didntgetdadslooks]

Oh. No, that was done through a procedure when you were taken in.

[mouflon]

So it was one procedure for everything, not just...

[ She makes a vague hand motion, but she's talking about Alice and the gems. ]

Yeah, one of The Professor's coworkers handled it. I don't know the particulars of how it works, but I do know it's reversible.

[mouflon]

It better be. It won't do me any good to put me back where I was if my magic circuits don't work.

Okay, one more thing. [ At this point, Rin sounds closer to resigned. ] You're keeping track of all this stuff, but can you actually do anything to fix it if something goes wrong?

Your circuits will be just fine.

[ Angel nods. ]

That's a perfectly reasonable concern. I have access to some controls - I can put the facility into lockdown, or cycle generators, things like that - but if things get really bad I can call the cleaning staff to handle most bigger maintenance.

[mouflon]

[ The noise that escapes Rin is — a snort? ]

Wow, they must be pissed. An engineering degree and they're mopping floors while they wait for some valve to break...

[didntgetdadslooks]

I'm told they get paid more than your average janitor, at least. But yeah, I wonder about that sometimes too.

[mouflon]

I doubt they'd take the job if they weren't being paid at least the same amount they'd make elsewhere.

[ So, like, she might take the offer in their shoes? But at the same time, what an insult. ]

Anyway, that's all I wanted to know. You're free to go find a book or whatever now.
