COMMENCE EXPERIMENT

Fun fact: Did you know that the Pacific Ocean has a surface area of 62.46 million miles? That's not even accounting for depth.

You awaken to a sharp jolt, like you've just hit the drop on a roller coaster. Then it passes, and you're in a bed, suddenly very clearly awake. Is that right? Were you asleep? Your memory is a little fuzzy as you come down off the adrenaline, but it puts itself into place soon enough. This is not, as one might say, your beautiful house. If you have a beautiful wife, she sure isn't here.

The positioning of the bed inside your new room gives you a very clear indication of where you are - or at least, where the building is. Above you is a decent-sized window looking out on... well, the ocean. But not in a fun beachside resort way, to say the least. Fish swim by pretty frequently, here to keep you company - but they cannot hear your screams, and do not seem particularly bothered if you tap on the glass unless they're right by it. It's thick, man.

On the bedside table, you'll find two things: a key card with a number between 1 and 25 on it (no points for guessing which one is on whose, unfortunately), and a small handheld device, a little like a smartphone but mostly like a blackberry? Remember those? Anyway, accessing it will reveal only a scarce few functions: a list of profiles, a map of the building, and a very ominous set of rules. You might try to ignore that last one! Unfortunately, you'll find them in a frame by your door. And in a frame somewhere in every room of the place, if you go out exploring at all. The tablet also has a message for you when you open it:

Greetings. Please take an hour to become accustomed to the facilities, then proceed to the meeting room north of your dormitories. Attendance is mandatory. - The Professor

But hey, it... it also lets you play Snake! Who doesn't love Snake, huh?

Anyway, head out into the halls! Make some new friends - or maybe enemies, wouldn't that be exciting? Look around a little! Just make sure to be back for whatever this meeting is - after all, you want a chance to face off with your captor, right?

It's true--one good thing has come from this, at least.

[ She nods, though. ]

And you have my word. I'll try not to go too wild... and I'll keep that secret. I like to think I'm not bad at keeping them.

[ She makes a show of looking around to make sure no one is in earshot, before putting a hand over her mouth to make sure no one can read her lips. How conspiratorial-- ]

There's a special plastic bag in there, in a hidden zipper compartment on the inside. Top secret contraband, highly classified, typically for my eyes only. You'll know it when you see it.

Code name? "Snackoos". And if you've never tried them before, they're divine. You secure the goods and bring them back to me safely, and I'll give you...mm, how's a 60% cut sound? Fair? Or do we need to negotiate?

[ She leans in, and Ema's got her expecting some sort of big, serious, crime-related reveal...

But then her eyes widen a little, and she almost lets out a little laugh. She puts on a serious face, though, as she nods. ]

I can't say I've had them before... but you're very convincing. Now I really need to find that bag. We can't let them fall into anyone else's hands, if they're that crucial.

As for my part... why don't we do an even split instead? They are yours, after all.

[ ... As if she wouldn't share if Ema ran out, anyway. ]

Oh, come on, Mira, you know as well as I do that the law of the land is "finders keepers, losers weepers." There's no need to be modest and go 50/50 with me. But they are extremely critical to our success, all of my forensic scientist instincts are telling me so. At least let me give you, like, 55% for your trouble? I'm telling you, if you think that just half the bag is gonna be enough to get your fill once you start eating them, you're very, very sadly mistaken!

[ She's pretty glad to see that start of a giggle, all things considered; there's a bit of a swell of confidence it gives her that doesn't feel misplaced. ]

[ There's a little bit of hesitation when she nods... but Ema seems so sure of this that it's hard not to believe her. ]

Well, if you insist.... it would be rude to argue, wouldn't it? [ She makes a little sound, half-close to a laugh again. ] Though, I'll make sure to really savor them. We might not find any more here.

I've found so many recipes to make a home-made version of them myself, but it's really just not the same at all...

[ Though, of course, she's really no ace in the kitchen. ]

There must be some kind of secret ingredient that they use to make them taste that good. You'll see for yourself, though. I wouldn't steer anyone wrong when it comes to food, not even my worst enemy.
