COMMENCE EXPERIMENT

Fun fact: Did you know that the Pacific Ocean has a surface area of 62.46 million miles? That's not even accounting for depth.

You awaken to a sharp jolt, like you've just hit the drop on a roller coaster. Then it passes, and you're in a bed, suddenly very clearly awake. Is that right? Were you asleep? Your memory is a little fuzzy as you come down off the adrenaline, but it puts itself into place soon enough. This is not, as one might say, your beautiful house. If you have a beautiful wife, she sure isn't here.

The positioning of the bed inside your new room gives you a very clear indication of where you are - or at least, where the building is. Above you is a decent-sized window looking out on... well, the ocean. But not in a fun beachside resort way, to say the least. Fish swim by pretty frequently, here to keep you company - but they cannot hear your screams, and do not seem particularly bothered if you tap on the glass unless they're right by it. It's thick, man.

On the bedside table, you'll find two things: a key card with a number between 1 and 25 on it (no points for guessing which one is on whose, unfortunately), and a small handheld device, a little like a smartphone but mostly like a blackberry? Remember those? Anyway, accessing it will reveal only a scarce few functions: a list of profiles, a map of the building, and a very ominous set of rules. You might try to ignore that last one! Unfortunately, you'll find them in a frame by your door. And in a frame somewhere in every room of the place, if you go out exploring at all. The tablet also has a message for you when you open it:

Greetings. Please take an hour to become accustomed to the facilities, then proceed to the meeting room north of your dormitories. Attendance is mandatory. - The Professor

But hey, it... it also lets you play Snake! Who doesn't love Snake, huh?

Anyway, head out into the halls! Make some new friends - or maybe enemies, wouldn't that be exciting? Look around a little! Just make sure to be back for whatever this meeting is - after all, you want a chance to face off with your captor, right?

Even if he won't tell us, speculating is fun in its own way. Could be a grand prize, after all. Like on one of those game shows?

[ Wouldn't that be rich... ]

[Shelley laughs. There's no chance in hell this is a gameshow, but honestly she needs the levity right now]

That's right. Or it could be one of those Big Brother reality shows. Soon we will find a confessional for when we feel like badmouthing our fellow participants.

Ah, so that's what's behind that locked door near the beds! That's one mystery down, right? At the rate we're solving them, getting out of here will be a cinch.

[ Nothing wrong with a sense of humor... ]

They should have gotten gals less clever than us. Tremble in fear of our combined brainpower, Professor!

Well, he should have known better than to mess with an Ace Scientist. ...Or, at least, that's what it seems like I'm being called these days.

[ As if flattery will get anyone anywhere. ...Well, maybe it will? ]

Lucky you, I got called Illeagle, and I don't think that's meant to mean I'm an eagle. I'm sure that's a pun for 'illegal'.

"Illegale"?

[ Definitely an odd term... ]

Does that phrase mean anything to you, or are they just trying to be funny?

Nope, it means nothing to me. It must be some sort of joke. I studied law, but that's about it.

[And since lawyers work with, well, legal matters...yeah, that's the only connection she can think]

Did you, now? It's a tough profession, you know...

[ She...knows a lot of lawyers, come to think of it. ]

My sister was the Chief Prosecutor of Los Angeles, so I know firsthand how harrowing that kind of work can be.

It's really tough. I graduated at the top of my class, but soon I found out I...I have a phobia of judges. A brilliant mind is useless when you're crying in the ladies' toilets.

[Not that it stops her from jumping at people's defense in legal matters when it really counts. She once was going to face her fears but alas, the situation resolved itself before she had the chance to]

Chief Prosecutor?! Cor, that's impressive! Your sister must have had nerves of steel!

Oh, you don't know the half of it.

[ Even now, Ema will take any chance she can get to gush over her older sister. ]

Lana's a savant. Top-ranked student in UCLA Law, and she did it while looking after me when I was still in grade school. She's no joke.

[ There's no shortage of pride in her voice, but, even still-- ]

That's a shame about the phobia, though. I will say, though, that our judge back in LA is probably the least imposing man I've ever seen in my life. Fear or no, if you were going to stand trial in front of anyone, he would definitely be my first pick. I'm sure he'd be understanding.

Los Angeles? Alright, if I decide to get back to law I'll move all the way to LA. Maybe a nice, non-imposing judge is what I need.

[Watch out, Phoenix Wright, if Shelley goes over there and gets back into law you'll have competition. Guaranteed.

It's hard not to notice all that pride. It's so warm it got Shelley smiling, it just is a contagious sort of pride]

Oooh, you have to introduce her to me someday! Anyone who can do that has to be an amazing person!
