So far, good news! You've managed to avoid killing! A week has passed in the facility, but how many more are there to go until one of you tries out Rule Seven? I mean.... we know, but.

No new areas just yet, it remains you guys and yours here for now. Well, and Angel, but again - you don't exactly see her unless you want to. It's more than a little lonely... maybe someone ought to shake things up.

I knew you two weren't human, but... all right. A diamond--it's not quite as valuable on the market as a ruby or emerald, but men die--or kill--for far less. Even if you have no use for it, it's not something to wave around carelessly.

[Rose smiles ruefully.]

I never knew humans considered rubies so valuable. That's nice. [It doesn't change anything, but it's nice to think about...] Take it, then. I don't want it.

[Well, it's a medieval thing. Almost like value is assigned arbitrarily via social construct and changes with the time and place!]

[He thinks about it some more, fingering the diamond in his pocket, then asks:]

Is it like if I came across human bones?

[Is it? That might require her to know a little more about what coming across human bones would be like for him.

Rose fiddles with one of the other items for a moment before answering.]

Maybe. It would be worse if it were broken, but even that...maybe it's a little like finding a dead body.

[Well, he actually fights reanimated human bones all the time, so maybe it's not the best example.]

...Because if it were broken, even if it had been alive like you... it wouldn't be anymore. I see.

Shards still have some power to them. But there's no way to make them whole again.

At least it's pretty difficult to break a diamond.

It is. Not Earth, but Homeworld and the colonies.

Not as much as you'd think.

Homeworld society is very rigid. Gems don't make art, or music, or anything like humans do. The only songs there are, are ones in honor of the Diamonds.

Are the songs any good?

They're just about how perfect the Diamonds are. How good can they be?

[She's enjoyed some of them, a long time ago. But there aren't that many, and - and - ]

Well, there's more to a song than the subject matter, but the way you talk about these Diamonds... now I'm more interested in the context I seem to be missing.

The Diamonds are the rulers of Gem society. All Gems are just tools or playthings to them, and all other lifeforms are just there to be destroyed. They don't care about anything but themselves.

Sounds like rulers everywhere.

The human rulers seem okay these days.

[She has to know they've had their fair share of tyrants. But then, they all died after just a few decades. Humans do that.]

I've never known any of them to destroy entire planets, anyway.

Only because they don't have the power to, I bet. [He puts his chin in his hand and looks away.] Humans at the top tend not to care about anything but what it takes to stay there.

They never stay there very long, at least.

Long enough, for those thrown beneath them.
