WEEK 6

Good morning, passengers. Happy Sunday. Happy New Year.

Three more of your number gone - or four, depending on your point of view. But regardless, you're down three bodies. The boat is getting less crowded, week by week. A loneliness only exacerbated by yet another new floor, and yet another section of topdeck. There are almost too many facilities for you to use by now, aren't there? And yet the amenities keep on coming. One of them is even personalized, this time, and perhaps not in a way you're fully comfortable with.

Who knows, maybe if your number falls enough, you'll be able to just exist permanently on the different floors. Might keep you out of the trial room for more than a week.

Are you at the point where you'd settle for that yet?

And if you look to the horizon, out in the distance... there are clouds starting to gather on the horizon this week.

Oh - neither have I. I am interested in art, but I have not engaged very much in textiles.

What is the best beginning project to make?

I actually do not know. I am simply...trying things out.

[The bear she's working on now seems pretty simple? Create bear shape, cut two pieces of fabric, stitch with right sides together and leave a hole to turn inside-out...]

Though I had the opportunity, I never did find the time to learn how to sew...now I wish I had.

[Hm, okay. Data considers the materials available, then picks up some fabric and begins to cut it. He's got the ability to calculate and spatially project shit, at least, so this probably won't be as hard for him as a normal person.]

I suppose I had the opportunity, but it did not come up. While these arts are still practiced in my time, they are no longer quite as necessary for daily life.

Really? Then, how are clothes made?

They are replicated. A replicator is a machine that can create something from its component atoms. They are also commonly used for food and other necessities - I typically use mine to make Spot's food and any art materials I require.

Some people are traditionalists and prefer hand-made clothes, but that is the case for most things.

It simply makes the item you need? Out of thin air? That would be incredibly useful to have on hand!

Yes, it is! It went a long way towards solving many of the problems that had previously plagued Earth.

[although look we have what we need to solve world hunger right now it's just about distribution]

The uniform I am wearing now was made in that manner. [He holds out his hand, palm-up, as if allowing her to check out the material of his sleeve. It's, like, normal.]

Really? [Oogles...] That is so very fascinating! I think, were I to have such a device...well, I do not know what I would use it for! There are far too many possibilities.

[She could make flowers or candies or, oh! Or medicines! Or copies of books! Or fish! So many fish!]

Indeed! It cannot create living material - [I don't know that for sure but I have to believe it because the alternative is just too much] - but in all other respects, they are very versatile.

That is simply incredible. I doubt I will live to see such a marvelous thing come to be where I am from [Flayn you just might], but to imagine it as a possibility is thrilling!

Nonetheless, I do still enjoy creating things with my own hands. Many people do - it is far easier when one's basic needs are fulfilled.

I can imagine it is. [She looks back to her unfinished bear project.] A classmate of mine...well, ally really. Her name is Bernadetta, and while I have never had the honor of being invited to her room, the Professor says she has many things within it to make projects like this. Lots of fabrics and the like.

None of my friends are particularly engaged in textile arts. Several of them practice music or engage in theatrical productions.

I believe I will make a plush mouse. To serve as a cat toy.

Oh, that sounds perfect! We do have many cats among us here, now.

We do - it is strange, isn't it? Perhaps the captain has a soft spot for cats.

I am not sure I would call it a soft spot if he puts them in the machine specifically so we can retrieve them, but that is just me.

Perhaps, but the machine does not harm them. And now there are quite a few cats.

Now all we need is a dog or two and it will feel very similar to Garreg Mach.

I have rarely encountered dogs. They are not common on starships, even those with family quarters - there is still not as much space as they find preferable.

You have not? Well, they are quite nice. Different from cats, but just as loving.

[Flayn does not discriminate she loves all the creatures]

Maybe when we leave this place, you will have the opportunity to befriend one.

That would be interesting. I know they are very popular pets.

I know they can be preferred over cats by some. Personally, I happen to like both.
