Week 5

Good morning, New Rapture. A new day is dawning.

Another week, another motive, another trial. Even without a literal time loop, it's easy to start to feel stuck in something of a rut. Though vandalism parties and the like can help shake the feeling somewhat, it's only natural to start going a little... stir-crazy, don't you think?

Fortunately for you, another week brings another new section of New Rapture to investigate. This one is the biggest yet! And look at that fun theme park. And a bar!

Seven of you are dead, but eighteen of you remain. What you do to try to escape is up to you, but at least following :)'s advice gets you coins for stuff, you know?

You're forgetting where we are, Brett. When has anything here been normal?

[He does get an idea though...a probably...kind of stupid idea.]

Have you checked the library? There might be books on...penguin management?

...maybe there's a copy of Mr. Popper's Penguins.

Is this ‘Mr. Popper’ guy famous for penguin rearing?

[inaclearing]

[He laughs.]

No, it's just a kid's book. About a guy with a bunch of pet penguins. He got a lot of ice, I think, but I'm not sure where to do that here.

[dullshooter]

All signs point to the pool, ‘cos nobody uses it on account of the dead body we found in there the other week. Either that or the dark ride…I’m also counting down the days until that one becomes a crime scene too, for the record.

[And he did not have to count long.]

Which just leaves ‘where the hell do you get the ice from’ as the last question to be solved.

[inaclearing]

The dark ride doesn't seem very...clean.

[Just you wait!]

Well, I know the kitchen in the restaurant won't send any up. And our fridge in the dorm doesn't make anywhere near enough. [...] Maybe I'll ask Eleanor.

[dullshooter]

Oh, yeah…Eleanor.

[Said like he only just remembered she exists.]

Have you been chatting to her?

[inaclearing]

Not a ton, but - yeah, some. I think I should probably do it more, but I just...there's always something going on here.

[dullshooter]

And then before you know it - boom! There's a body. Never a dull moment.

[What's more absurd - post-war peace or going a week in this place without something happening?]

If it's any consolation, I pretty much haven't spoken to her. Kinda forget she's there half the time. Though, getting cosy with Fontie's little right hand probably isn't a bad idea. Like, maybe she's plotting to overthrow him?

[inaclearing]

I don't know about that. I just worry about her. The whole situation between them is...really creepy.

[dullshooter]

So, not a Starscream kind of vibe? ...I guess that can't be anything but a good thing, actually.

[Can't exactly trust someone who makes a whole aesthetic out of backstabbing.]

But, go on. What kind of creepy are we talking about?

[inaclearing]

I mean...she's a vulnerable teenager. That much undying loyalty? Gives me a sort of cult vibe. It seems...dangerous, at the least.

[It isn't really the same as Peregrine and Howl; she wouldn't have followed him that far, and honestly Brett remains sort of unconvinced that Howl was really leading her to half of that stuff. But there's...parallels. It was dangerous.]

[dullshooter]

When you put it like that...

[Misfire draws a sharp breath through his teeth. Yeesh.]

Maybe she could stand to be a little more backstabby. 'Cus I'm fairly certain that nothing with a 'cult vibe' ends well.

What do you say - knife and pep talk?

[inaclearing]

[A bemused chuckle slips through.]

You wanna give her a knife?

[dullshooter]

Knife, sword - I’m not picky about what kind of pointy thing it is.

[inaclearing]

Huh. Well - yeah, sure, why not?

[Sure, she's theoretically one of their captors, but by that same token Brett is pretty sure she could get a weapon just fine on her own if she wanted it.]

She seems like she knows how to fight, or...something.

[dullshooter]

We've just got to make sure we deliver the pep-talk first. So she doesn't try to turn the pointy bit back on us.

[Maybe it sounded like a joke suggestion at first, but now...]

Then, when she makes a skewer out of Fontie, she'll fondly remember how instrumental we all were in her achieving newfound autonomy and independence, and let us all go. Either in thanks, or 'cause she realised that keeping us all here is antithetical to the lessons she's just learned.

[Foolproof.]

That'd be a nice story, wouldn't it? Saving ourselves through saving someone else.

With the power of narrative significance on our side, it's bound to work out.
