[ It's not terribly long, once everything has been found, before Davy Jones heads out to round you all up once more and take you into the theatre. At least plenty of you are around the same area, so it probably doesn't take terribly long.

The ride down to the trial room is the same as ever - a blast of the organ, a slow descent. It's really starting to become clear, though, just how your numbers are decreasing. You're already down three, counting the absence of Chloe, potentially more when you come back up.

The crew of the Dutchman is singing as Jones lets you out into the trial room. ]

I found froyo. Uh, you know, from the ice cream place? The thing is, it's been tampered with, I found, well-- [He also places the wintergreen essential oil bottle] --this in the trash. Last I checked these spa oils weren't meant to be eaten, so...you should stay away from this.

If Decus looked like he was poisoned then it probably was with some of this?

That's the activated charcoal one, isn't it?

It is! Which is strange, isn't it? Because I thought activated charcoal was meant to help during poisonings, so it's not really the kinda stuff you'd be eating randomly?

[Or so he supposes, maybe Decus or Plumeria had a knack for eating charcoal, who is he to judge]

They both knew that. Decus ate it fairly regularly, and I mentioned it to Plumeria after the third trial.

... That said, essential oils are dangerous because they irritate the skin. A burnt out esophagus really isn't something charcoal was going to help with.

True. However, they may not have been aware of those facts.

I think the fact that it was in that particular one meant that it was aimed to poison either of them, not just a random person.

Decus, probably. The only people who'd know Plumeria was aware would be her and I, and if I were responsible, I'm not nearly stupid enough to just admit that with no provocation.

That does seem likely, Filbo, since whatever Decus was poisoned with didn't kill him.

So...maybe this was just meant to make whoever ate it be unable to do anything? Since they'd be feeling sick? I dunno, if this was meant to be fatal maybe something more dangerous would have been used.

Well, on the other paw, this was in the activated charcoal, so maybe the usual poisons wouldn't work anyway.

It does seem unlikely that someone would try to poison someone else in a way that wouldn't be fatal... Perhaps they didn't realize the activated charcoal would mess up their plan?

Someone was looking for that in the spa. [He points to the essential oils bottle.] Like, they deliberately looked through the bottles and just took that one.

If it was meant to poison someone kinda a bit wouldn't any oil work for that? Why would they specifically want wintergreen?

My guess would be to try to conceal it as a flavoring.

It did smell kinda minty, and mint is a good ice cream flavor...that may be it.

Can wintergreen be a poison on its own? Or could it have been used to cover up something else?

The essential oils themselves could be; not the most efficient poison I can think of, but enough to make someone seriously ill and possibly kill them. Using one that tastes strongly of something benign may be enough to get someone to eat enough of it.

It's minty, right? If you don't know the difference between an extract and an essential oil, you might not know an essential oil is bad for you.

[reminder that scott pilgrim is a very good cook, actually, but is absolutely dumb enough to have tried using essential oils in cooking until wallace explained why you shouldn't to him]
