Good morning, New Rapture. A new day is dawning.

It's now been a week since you were all captured. Perhaps you've already settled in. Perhaps you're already confident that you'll make it out of New Rapture alive. How serious about this could Mayor Fontaine possibly be, really?

While there still may not be much to do in your little hotel bubble, you've at least been granted a little more now - some kind of mysterious room and a sizeable library of all things. And in all the places you've looked so far, you've found valuable information, and even learned some of the story of New Rapture along the way.

At any rate, are we not all in an alliance of necessity at the moment? I thought it was kind of an unspoken thing.

I'd call it an alliance of sorts. On the surface I think it's safe to assume that everyone is aligned against that Voice, for now. What that means though, could very well vary by the individual. You can assume that most of us would want to return home, but there might be someone who doesn't have a home to return to, or where the circumstance there is worse—a post-apocalyptic world or something similar.

Our motivations will vary, and that shouldn't be forgotten.

On a granular level, consider an individual who has decided that murdering another is a fair price for their freedom. In that case they could be using this time to scope out targets, formulate a plan, and possibly make an alliance. The rules state that the only way to "graduate" is to commit a murder, and then "get away with it". It's far easier to cover up a crime with several pair of hands, as long as you can trust them.

[ If he sounds like a guy who's used to leading meetings, that's absolutely true. ]

Ah, of course. Knowing accomplices. But such arrangements... eh, they rarely go well in the long run.

[ He does a stupid little waving-away gesture to accompany this statement, which is actually quite deeply-felt, all things considered! What have the last few months been if not proof that, among creatures with a killer's intent, there is no such thing as harmonious co-leadership? ]

If anything the guy with the big hair said applies to this situation, everyone who is not the braised [ listen............. shut up ] will be summarily executed should they succeed, making multiple killings a necessity. And that is much more difficult to cover up. Chances are high that the real move is to play at an alliance for the sake of murder, then stab your collaborator in the back.

M-Must we be discussing such grisly topics right now?

[Sure he knows that it's somewhat important to be aware of this possibility but he hates it!]

I refuse to allow any corpses to pile up on our watch! Our energy would be much better devoted to finding an escape out of here.

Of course, that's a possibility too. It's why I don't assume any alliance unless explicitly stated, or without confirmation that all parties agree on the terms. At the end of the day, it's not like we know each other intimately.

[ Did he need to say it like that? No. Is he saying it like that? Yes. ]

Eh, don't act like I came up with this shit! He is the one who said it.

[ Hagakure is absolutely not the one who said it. Nandor, categorically, is the only one who has said it. ]

... It is true, however, about the intimates and all. Perhaps this is why none of us seem to know each other. If any of us did, it would give them an undue advantage.

I concur. I admit to referring to him as the Mayor, but if he is not going to respect us, we shouldn't extend respect to him.

But... I'm afraid I am unsure what to refer to him otherwise.

... I may need to slumber on that one. [ He can't suggest just calling him "that fucking guy", which is really the only thing he's inclined to say! Jonathan might get the vapors! ] It is harder to come up with an insulting nickname when you do not actually know what the man looks like.
