Good morning, New Rapture. A new day is dawning.

It's now been a week since you were all captured. Perhaps you've already settled in. Perhaps you're already confident that you'll make it out of New Rapture alive. How serious about this could Mayor Fontaine possibly be, really?

While there still may not be much to do in your little hotel bubble, you've at least been granted a little more now - some kind of mysterious room and a sizeable library of all things. And in all the places you've looked so far, you've found valuable information, and even learned some of the story of New Rapture along the way.

Make sure to keep talking to the others! You want to keep those regain coins flowing, don't you?

[Good, good! Obi will keep showing him as long as he needs to get a decent punch going.]

--What, like, a cannon? Yeah, those are kinda hard to manage unless you know what you're doing.

[inaclearing]

Like a handheld one. I could have learned how to fire one - maybe not in the city, but a lot of people around Whitetail hunt.

[Punch!]

Not me, though. I've seen them, I don't have the stomach for that.

[kninja]

[His face scrunches. He's trying to imagine a handheld cannon.]

It sounds... messy. I don't blame you. Even with bows and arrows, bloody work like that isn't for everyone.

[inaclearing]

The kids I was...working with, on my last project. [He frowns a little, like he isn't sure of that phrasing, but carries on nonetheless.] They were learning to hunt with bows and arrows, and prepare the animals afterwards. That was bad enough to see. I always felt a little silly, not being able to watch when I'm almost twice their age, but...geez.

[kninja]

Why would you feel silly about that?

[inaclearing]

Guess it seems like I should have been able to handle it better.

[Because of Howl, mostly. The kids never said a word, but he could always feel Howl's eyes on him.]

I was the...city boy there, I guess you could say. And the whole point was that they were trying to teach themselves more than the adults were willing to. Because they'd rather...turn away from it.

[kninja]

Hmm.

[Obi interrupts the conversation to give Brett a rundown on the basic arm block so he can practice that, too, and gives a couple more pointers on his stance and on keeping his fists up.

After all that, he circles back with:]

Kinda sounds like they're trying to prove they're better than you adults by acting tough in the woods. And it sounds like you kinda agree with them?

[inaclearing]

Not all of it.

[God, we haven't even talked about the Final.]

But...I do think they should've been taught what to do if they ever got lost out there. Maybe not to that extent, but something. Acting like it'll never happen doesn't help anyone.

[kninja]

I see.

I think there's a difference between reacting badly to a nasty sight and blinding yourself to the truth. We all have things we don't handle well, adult or not.

[inaclearing]

That's true.

[flashforward to brett almost fainting at seeing a body in a couple days!]

They were right that the community needed better training. The second time a search party had to go out, a couple of the kids practically led it, and it actually worked. It's not...just about everyone having to be self-reliant. You can't be - no one can ever prepare for everything.

[kninja]

Exactly. No one would expect me to mix a salve or mediate some lordly dispute, just like I'd never see My Lady wield a blade. All of us around Master, we have different strengths to lend one another. I dunno you that well yet, Brett, but I'm sure you do, too.

[Just not in the field of blood and death! It's fine, that's what you got all these war criminals for.]

[inaclearing]

Ah, well. We'll see how it goes.

[e doesn't even sound like he's trying to be self-deprecating, per se. Just - the skills he does have don't super relate to any of this.]
