SECOND TRIAL

[ After sufficient time has passed, and you're all as ready to avenge dear Obi as you've ever been, Mayor Fontaine speaks. ]

Alright, that oughta do it. Pack up the evidence and head to the bathyspheres, same as last week.

[ There's yet again a line of spherical submersibles back there, ready to take off as the citizens of New Rapture climb aboard one or two at a time. And one at a time the bathyspheres descend into the abyss below New Rapture, deeper and deeper, once again to the dome on the seafloor, lit all around by bio-luminescent... slugs, of some kind? They're a little closer today.

The ring of podiums still sits in the center, just like last week. Two more podiums are going to stand empty. Two more dead. By the end of the day, best case scenario? It'll be three.

The projector clicks on. Mayor Fontaine is as here as he's gonna be. ]

You all know why you're here. Night Knight is dead. And I know plenty of you liked him alright, so don't let him down, hm? Or do. I'm here if you have questions.

[ Welcome to your second trial. ]

Would all of you have said the same about Hodaka?

[He...doesn't like this.]

Would you all have stood around calling him things and looking forward to his execution, would you all have said that you only wish you could have killed him yourself, that death is too good for him?

We're dealing with desperate people here. If I'm wrong then so be it, but if I'm not...?

Forrest's got a point. Sounds kinda hypocritical, guys.

[He looks away. He promised Forrest he wouldn't let his emotions get ahead of him but...

There was a difference between the past trial and the current one that he didn't have the courage to state.]

Easier to say stuff like that when you don't know the full story.

[Brett has to agree. Even as upset as he is...well, people were upset last week before they found out what happened with Hodaka, weren't they? They probably would've regretted speaking like this about him then.

He doesn't really feel it anyway. Maybe he's just someone a little more inclined towards despair than anger.]

I have to agree with this. I understand being angry and upset about Obi's death, but please remember that this was most likely caused by the motive. Let's try to remember that going forward.

This is a rapid turn around from "Fontaine is the real monster here" I have to say.

[he's not going to say anything as he feels he's made his point but ISN'T IT JUST THOUGH.]

I feel like there is a significant difference between knowingly consigning over twenty people to death and killing one person. Perhaps if they were confess now and save us the trouble of hunting them down I would think better of them, but the longer they draw things out the more I am inclined to think ill of them.

You aren't answering me. Would you have said the same of Hodaka or not? Because everyone was on some truly pretentious "Fontaine is the real monster here" business last week. This week, however, you're all being vile.

It's rather uncomfortable to be calling the Mayor a monster and then look forward to an execution. It's still cheering for death.

It's... yes. Vile is the right word, I believe.
howveryglib: still serious. still poorly lit. (GENUINELY cannot believe he fucked.)

[personal profile] howveryglib 2022-07-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
You are operating on an entirely different premise by using Hodaka's actions last week as an example, given that he confessed the moment he realized he would have killed all of us instead of just Adaman. Whoever did this absolutely knew what they were doing, and the longer they keep us guessing the more danger we are in of death. Had he done the same, I may have felt differently about his actions.

...

...I will say I do not wish to see another of those mockeries with the execution either.

You didn't know he was unaware this early in the trial, and yet you weren't behaving like this. Hagakure told all of us what was going to happen. Did you magically know that our culprit then hadn't listened? For all you knew, whomever did that to Adaman was after the exact same thing you're assuming now.

Stop being vile.
howveryglib: gaius talking serious. christ, man, emote (live with me if you want to--wait)

[personal profile] howveryglib 2022-07-02 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
No one had actually confirmed that the stakes were the same, and I had been rather distracted with the same matters you were dealing with to inquire about it early on.

[...you know. jonathan.

...maybe he does have a point because he wasn't nearly as torn up about adaman but fuck if he's going to admit it.]

In any case, this discussion is pointless. There are more important matters at hand than debating morality.
