Good morning, New Rapture. A new day is dawning.

Another week at the bottom of the sea. You may start to mark the passage of time by the increasing number of people you seem to be bleeding each week - look how few of you there are now. Nearly half your number gone, and for what? The shadowy machinations of some madman? You've met some others, but they seem unable or unwilling to solve this problem for you. Time marches onwards.

In the abyss, New Rapture starts to wake. It's small things, for now - the lights of a building here and there, the flicker of a neon sign for some small business. The restoration of this city continues.

Speaking of this city, there's a new branch of your little slice of it to explore. It's certainly the most picturesque of the branches you've seen.

There's more to see and do, citizens of New Rapture. And hey, there's coins to get, too.

I wasn't even saying anything! I was just... [He sobers slightly.] ...sitting here thinking.

[Is he trying to use language as a loophole??]

No? It isn't really a singing kind of place.

It never is. That's why it's so weird. You know what - I'm gonna get something to record this next time and show you.

[Because otherwise they'll get nowhere.]

Anyway - [He kicks his foot idly.] what were you think-slash-singing about?

God, I wish I had my recording equipment. Just - generally.

[He's...not entirely sure whether or not Misfire is fucking with him on the singing thing. He sobers, though, at the question.]

Oh, you know. Everything. [.....] I don't think I can keep this up.

[dullshooter]

[Misfire does a ??? but then he remembers - podcast. Damn. Now they don't have Jason with them anymore it'd be way less worth listening to. They could've probably just shoved the microphone in front of him and let him go off for an hour.]

I'm not surprised. I mean, no offense but, we've got plenty of the hardened and desensitised here and they're all starting to crack - what chance do you have? [There are far more sensitive ways to say that.] If you want to snap and go on a murderous rampage, killing everyone here, I don't think anyone could blame you.

[inaclearing]

[Brett's brow furrows.]

That's not really...I'm not going to do that.

[dullshooter]

But you could.

[And that's the important part! Or...something.]

Have you tried the whole 'talking about your feelings' thing? Heard it helps.

[Brett takes a deep breath and carefully lets it out again.]

It's not something I'm very good at. Obi - he only knew me a few weeks, and he told me once that I talk about all these other people, and never really myself.

[dullshooter]

[For a moment, Misfire's worried that Brett's about to tell him about his feelings instead of someone who's, like, actually good at this.]

I don't want to shock you, Brett, but...you're talking about yourself right now.

[inaclearing]

I'm not sure talking about how I don't talk about my feelings counts as talking about my feelings, Misfire.

[dullshooter]

[Hang on, he's doing the word math.]

[Well, it's not like that's not one of his issues...]

Well. We don't have to get into all that. [brett that's the opposite of the thing you are supposed to be doing?]

You’ve got to be kidding, right? That’s word-for-word something I’d say as a joke for this very situation.

[inaclearing]

[Brett laughs.]

Okay, but do you actually want to hear it? You're not my therapist. No offense, but you don't really seem like the type anyway.

[He told you he was scared he'd die here like two weeks ago and you were like "lol yeah probably".]

Hey, I’m one of the most compassionate ‘cons out there.

But you should probably tell Gaius, or Joy. They’re both advice-y types. Listening is about all I can promise you. It’s on offer, though.

Well, I appreciate it.

[Brett considers for a moment.]

I guess I just don't like the idea of being vulnerable. I'm plenty vulnerable here already, without getting my emotions all over the place. No one wants to see that.

…I said I wouldn’t do the advice thing, I said I’m no good at the advice thing, but Seo Dawon went completely off the rails because - okay because he was legitimately dead inside - but also because he never said ‘hey, I’m kind of losing it over here’ to anyone.

[Not here, and not before. He was too damn proud for that, he’s sure of it.]

…Not to say you’re going to turn out like that, but there’s things we’d all like to see a whole lot less than you showing a bit of emotional vulnerability.

[inaclearing]

...I'm not much better than Jonathan, you know. I just don't put it on everyone else.

[And we all know how people feel about that.]

The thing with Jonathan is that he times all his emotional confessions with when we’re trying to solve a murder to avoid mass execution. Also I don’t like him.

[At least he’s honest?]

You don’t have to worry about the second point, so just avoid the first one and you’re safe.

I just -

[Brett raises both his hands in an exasperated fashion, then drops them and lets out a long breath.]

I get it. I do. The whole time he was going on, last time, all I was thinking was - "Why wouldn't he do it on Tuesday? That's what I'd do." Someone dies and the motive's gone, it'd be easy, and you wouldn't just die for nothing. I - I'd already thought it all out.

[Misfire’s not …glad to hear Brett say it, by any means; the uncharacteristic turn in his expression says as much. But it’s probably good he’s getting it out there, right?

Right.]

…Then why didn’t you do it?

[It’s a tactless question, but he thinks - maybe there’ll be something in the answer to it.]

It wouldn't help anything. There'd just be another motive. I can make up a nice, self-sacrificial story to explain it. I can make myself sound good. But at the end of the day, it'd just be about me wanting out of here. And I can't...do that to everyone. Not the people here, and...well, I doubt anyone at home would ever find out, but...it'd be awful.
