Well, you've now met the brains of the operation, as well as the shockingly nice-looking young lady in charge of day-to-day business. Now all that's left is to get used to your accommodations - there's 24 other people in similar shoes to yours to meet in this building, you know! And who knows how much longer you might have them...

The daily routine in the facility quickly becomes obvious - the only way to tell time moment to moment is to check the strange device The Professor gave you, but at the same time every day the lights in and out of the facility go up, and at the same time every night they go down. Otherwise, it's almost maddening sometimes, how little happens in here. At least you have a few rooms with enough to hopefully keep you occupied. Who knows what secrets they might hold? And there's always that vending machine, if you can find something that fits in the coin slot...

[She has a point. He considers that, then leans closer to the glass himself to look not down, but to the north and west.]

Could be some of that's placed where we can't see it from here.

[He shrugs.]

Maybe not the foundation, but anything else.

Past the locked portions, then. Surely something important's there too, of course. I simply don't only want to write everything off for the obvious without considering the rest.

Of course. Ignoring the simple things is what gets people killed.

There might be more built under or around the library, too. Odd that there aren't any windows there.

[emberserker]

That's true. Passages in a library are a classic in these stories, aren't they? And this idiot seems to think making such things real is a good idea, so surely he could be that eccentric.

[bolderfell]

Are there a lot of stories about these things?

[emberserker]

About being trapped someplace, anyway, or about eccentrics with strange buildings and dark secrets. Doesn't your home have them?

[bolderfell]

Typically, the stories I seek out are based in truth first, however stretched it may be. Not a lot of time in my line of work for fiction. But yeah. I've encountered my share of wealthy households full of secrets.

[emberserker]

I'm simply making sure everyone's on the same page. Not everybody's used to skulking about others' property.

[bolderfell]

True. Just makes me wonder how well the traps and passageways from made-up stories would work in reality. If you think this Professor's working more from fantasy than fact, we have to consider stupid ideas as thoroughly as sensible ones.

[emberserker]

I think he hasn't shown enough of his cards to tell yet. He may be willing to tell us we're on a modern Earth and such, but what he can and can't do, or rather, how he does it is what any investigation needs to focus on.

Of course. Too bad he isn't here to investigate.

His assistant. What do you make of her?

Polite and mostly useless. She doesn't seem to be much a fan of the murder, but he must keep her around for something.

[bolderfell]

I'm more interested in what she gets out of this... arrangement. If she has objections to the Professor's experiment, then she's here for something else.

[emberserker]

Plenty of people will go against what they would normally do if the thing they want most is on the line. There's got to be a reward. Similar to how the Professor said a lot rode on his project.

[bolderfell]

If we find out what it is, we can use it.

[emberserker]

What's his incentive? It can't really just be curiosity, with all that focus on his backers and whatever stakes he's got.

[bolderfell]

...On the device, it says he likes mental exercise, money, and "bringing out the best in people."

I could see a project of this scale satisfying all three of those desires.

[emberserker]

Bring out the best in whom? It sounds more like the worst to me.

[bolderfell]

[He shakes his head.]

You didn't notice? When he spoke with us the other day, a lot of you kept going on about how he was asking us to kill each other. Every time, though, he said that was just one option.

I think he's genuinely curious what we'll do. It sounds like the kind of idiotic test a scholar would come up with--to see if the lot of us do act our best. Or not.

[That's a lot of words, for Therion, and he ends the opinion with a shrug.]

It just comes off as a lot of excuses. Honestly, how would anybody? Regardless, I doubt "live out your lives here until he dies of natural causes" is really an option for anyone.

[bolderfell]

Of course it isn't. I'm just saying, it's some of us "test subjects" who decided killing was the only way out. We haven't nearly gone over every other possible route of escape.

[emberserker]

Of course there's got to be something. They've got restricted areas and such, after all. There had to be some way of getting us in.

[bolderfell]

Exactly. I'm willing to bet the Assistant knows it. We also have twenty-five sets of eyes and nothing to do with them but search or... watch flowers on that glass box.

[Or, like, read books. But gross.]

I'd trust an exit we turn up ourselves far more than anything a man like the Professor promises.

[emberserker]

Oh, most likely. The one-channel television can't possibly entertain anyone down here even if they have given up. I suppose I'll keep an eye out; there's no point in not doing it, after all.

Likewise. ...Come across anything that might require a thief's expertise, I may be willing to take a look.
