WEEK 1

Well, you've now met the brains of the operation, as well as the shockingly nice-looking young lady in charge of day-to-day business. Now all that's left is to get used to your accommodations - there's 24 other people in similar shoes to yours to meet in this building, you know! And who knows how much longer you might have them...

The daily routine in the facility quickly becomes obvious - the only way to tell time moment to moment is to check the strange device The Professor gave you, but at the same time every day the lights in and out of the facility go up, and at the same time every night they go down. Otherwise, it's almost maddening sometimes, how little happens in here. At least you have a few rooms with enough to hopefully keep you occupied. Who knows what secrets they might hold? And there's always that vending machine, if you can find something that fits in the coin slot...

It's a carrot hanging in front of our faces. Do you miss the mountains? Too bad, all you have is a picture. [Shelley shakes her head in mock exasperation] It's insulting. Nobody would act just because they see a few pictures...

[...]

...I hope?

[She sure would like to think nobody would, at least!]

[This conversation is actually deeply ironic, considering Alice is to a human as a stock photo is to the real thing. Smoke and mirrors, indeed.

Her mouth sets in a grim line.]

I would truly hope it'd take more than that.

[Hmmm...perhaps something could be done with the TV...Shelley gets closet to it, looking at it from all angles]

Do you know anything about tech, Alice?

[personal profile] precognit 2020-04-09 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a little bit. I'm not a tech genius, though, by any stretch.

[...]

What are you thinking?

I dunno if we're getting any TV signal all the way down here, but you think it could be worth a try? Messing in there until another channel works?

[It's suuuuch an astronomical chance, but hey, when has that stopped anyone]

[Alice gives a shrug.]

Might as well try, at least. Though I don't know if the Professor would be too pleased about it...

We're not here to do things so the Professor is pleased! If he wanted to be pleased he shouldn't have locked people in the bottom of the ocean! It's rebellion time!

[Rebellioooooon! She's already trying to get the TV onto its screen so they can work with the back]

Didn't say we were! Just...making an observation.

[Alice fully agrees, don't worry Shelley!]

So the first thing we have to do is open this telly right open. For that we'll need a screwdriver, but unless one of us got a toolkit at some point that's not happening. Any ideas?

[Her nail sure doesn't seem to fit the screws, Shelley finds out]

[Alice bites her lip for a moment.]

Let me try...

[She slots her pinkie nail into the groove in the first screw, and with surprising ease, twists the screw, which begins to unscrew with relative ease and a little bit of wristwork on Alice's part.]

My nails have always been pretty sturdy.

Excellent!

[Ah, thank goodness you're here, Alice. Shelley takes off the back cover, staring inside. Hmmmm...]

...so, where do we start?

[It's a biiiit more convoluted than she thought it'd be]

[Alice stares, a little blankly.]

Your guess is as good as mine. Shelley, maybe we shouldn't...I'm afraid we'll break it.

...I guess you're right, but it's pretty disappointing -- coming this far only to be stumped.

[She almost wants to go on, buuut...breaking it is...a real possibility...

...if she will try she may have to do it alone so Alice doesn't get involved. If there'll be trouble then may as well keep that limited only to herself]

I know. But maybe if we ask this assistant the Professor mentioned...we could get them to add channels? Or give us something else to do, anyway.
