WEEK 1

Well, you've now met the brains of the operation, as well as the shockingly nice-looking young lady in charge of day-to-day business. Now all that's left is to get used to your accommodations - there's 24 other people in similar shoes to yours to meet in this building, you know! And who knows how much longer you might have them...

The daily routine in the facility quickly becomes obvious - the only way to tell time moment to moment is to check the strange device The Professor gave you, but at the same time every day the lights in and out of the facility go up, and at the same time every night they go down. Otherwise, it's almost maddening sometimes, how little happens in here. At least you have a few rooms with enough to hopefully keep you occupied. Who knows what secrets they might hold? And there's always that vending machine, if you can find something that fits in the coin slot...

[ By now, she's got a pad of paper in hand, and a pen. It looks like she's drawing the fish that swim by, but she looks up from her work when she sees Aela. ]

No... I couldn't. [ A kind of sheepish laugh. ] I guess a few of us can't.

[shieldsister]

[She's not going to barge into Mira's space to come look, but she's definitely eyeing the paper curiously.]

Indeed. What are you working on?

[philoxenia]

[ Luckily, she doesn't mind showing her! She's actually pretty good. ]

I've been drawing the fish as they come along.

[shieldsister]

Ah, I see.

[Wow, look at that!]

You're skilled, too. Do you often draw?

[philoxenia]

Oh--

[ Her cheeks turn a little pink. ]

Thank you. I've been drawing since I was young, so... I've had time to improve. I still have a long way to go, though.

[shieldsister]

Of course. There are always improvements to be made and challenges to overcome.

[Practice doesn't make perfect but it sure does make you really damn good!!!]

What made you decide to start drawing?

[philoxenia]

Well... it gave me something to do when I wasn't in school. And my brother encouraged it, so... I guess that was my biggest motivation.

[shieldsister]

[Huh...]

You're very fond of your brother, aren't you. [It's not really a question.] Tell me more about him. What was he like?

[That may not be an acceptable topic of conversation, but she's definitely curious, so why not ask?? Who needs manners.]

[philoxenia]

[ Oh. She clears her throat lightly. ]

Well... when I was younger, he was the one who took care of me. We moved together about... um, six years ago. He loved making things, especially for me--he had a workshop he spent a lot of time in. He... was the kindest person I think I'll ever know... but he certainly wouldn't let people walk over him.

He encouraged me to pursue whatever I had interest in... even if it didn't work out. Baking, cooking, art... He always seemed proud to see whatever I made for him.

[shieldsister]

I'm sure he appreciated seeing you pursue your passions. I don't have any siblings by blood, but my fellow Companions are close enough. It's much the same for us, at least.

[philoxenia]

... I think you're right.

[ She nods. ]

Family isn't always the name you're born into. I've always believed that--sometimes, your blood isn't what a family should be like.

[shieldsister]

Agreed. I was born to a kind family, but that certainly isn't true of all of my shield-brothers. The bonds we share are easily as strong as blood ties.
