WEEK 1

Well, you've now met the brains of the operation, as well as the shockingly nice-looking young lady in charge of day-to-day business. Now all that's left is to get used to your accommodations - there's 24 other people in similar shoes to yours to meet in this building, you know! And who knows how much longer you might have them...

The daily routine in the facility quickly becomes obvious - the only way to tell time moment to moment is to check the strange device The Professor gave you, but at the same time every day the lights in and out of the facility go up, and at the same time every night they go down. Otherwise, it's almost maddening sometimes, how little happens in here. At least you have a few rooms with enough to hopefully keep you occupied. Who knows what secrets they might hold? And there's always that vending machine, if you can find something that fits in the coin slot...

[ ooc: Welcome to Peace Week! Enjoy it while it lasts. Remember, office hours for The Professor's Assistant are over here if you're interested, while regains can be deposited over here! ]

[ If she can't do something physically while learning, she'll destroy the book. That's. That's just what the problem is. ]

...You sure it isn't a place with similar fish? How do we know if we're even on Earth?
reallyhatesharks: (hammerhead's one scary guy)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's not my Earth or possibly even your Earth. It's an Earth. [She points to a passing fish.] Did you know most fish are highly specialized? They're adapted to exactly where they live. To get fish that look exactly the same as ones on Earth - any Earth where catastrophic events haven't caused short-term mutations - the conditions would have to be the same down to the exact temperature of the water.

[Nova watches the fish go by and then says, quieter:]

The fish where I'm from don't look like this anymore.
nothingcanstop: (came down from the sky)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-09 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
[ Della's about to ask, is she a marine biologist, that she knows so much about all this, it's so interesting, this sounds like it's from experience--

But then she hears that other part and the words die in her mouth. ]

Oh... Oh, I'm... I'm sorry, you don't really...have to go into it, it's alright.

[ Catastrophic events, huh? ]
reallyhatesharks: (there are no sharknados)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
It's just nature. [She shrugs. It's just another things sharks ruined, really.] Things got weird after the first sharknado destroyed most of Los Angeles: sharks adapted to living in the clouds and fish ended up a lot of places they weren't supposed to be. Most of them died. Some of them didn't. Some of them got a little weird after we tried more experimental anti-sharknado measures.
nothingcanstop: (the ground is falling backwards)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-09 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
A shark...nado- is that- [ She puts a few things together, sharks living in clouds, and- ] A tornado? Made of sharks?!

[ This is a first for her. She's utterly stunned. Congrats! ]
reallyhatesharks: (let's go swimming in the ocean)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yes? It's on my profile. [She flicks through her own ID for a second, before holding up her profile.] Sharknado researcher. Although if you asked about a decade ago, I was a bartender.
nothingcanstop: (the news caught)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-09 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ Ah, the profiles. Della appears sheepish, for a moment. ]

I, uh, am still looking through all of those. And a sharknado... I've seen some weird, wild, and outright bizarre things, but not anything like that. Did someone...manufacture it, or was it a natural disaster?
reallyhatesharks: (the water's getting dark)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
Oh they're natural. Ancient weather phenomena that humanity stopped somehow - never really did work that one out - and then they came back with a vengeance for whatever reason.

[There's a very strong "it be like that sometimes" vibe to Nova's tone.]
nothingcanstop: (for flying dead bodies)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-09 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
[ There's a lot to unpack here. We're doing it later. ]

And...has it just kept happening, since then? For the last ten years?
reallyhatesharks: (i see that sharknado coming for me)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's been... [Nova actually counts on her hands, because your sense of time gets a little weird when you time travel.] Six years. Sort of.

[But she met Fin about four years before that, basically fresh out of bartending school.]
nothingcanstop: (and i got my first job)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-09 05:58 am (UTC)(link)
[ of fucking course there's time travel in this series ]

Uh...huh. How often do they happen?
reallyhatesharks: (there's no place you can hide)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on where you are and how many active storm fronts are nearby, but on average about one a week in most parts of the world.
nothingcanstop: (then suddenly the wheels lift off)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-09 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
...How can you even defend against something like that?
reallyhatesharks: (threasher bites bye bye bye)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of firepower, mostly, but the real answer is just... You don't.

[She's managed to survive by the sheer luck of being really tenacious, but other people she's known haven't been so lucky.]
nothingcanstop: ("are you better than us‚ do you think?")

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-09 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
[ For a moment, Della is quiet. Then, a little tentatively, she places a feathered hand on Nova's arm. ]

You don't have to answer anything else. I really am sorry.
reallyhatesharks: (stormy weather suicide)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks. [She means that.] I can talk to you about the science of a sharknado all day, but the reality of it is a little different.
nothingcanstop: (and suddenly shocked)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-09 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
We'll stick to the science, then. [ She spares a passing glance at the fish, and-- ] You've already given us a place to start with where in the world we are.
reallyhatesharks: (so so so so so so so)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-09 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's weird. [Nova looks over at the fish swimming by.] I usually don't see them alive. I mostly deal with what sharks have been eating so I can better track storm fronts.
nothingcanstop: (suddenly i'm flying company charters)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-13 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it nicer? To see them swimming around and...you know, normal? What am I saying, of course it is. Never been a fish kind of gal myself, but...they aren't all bad, when they're just minding their own business.
reallyhatesharks: (all through the ocean that shark)

[personal profile] reallyhatesharks 2020-04-15 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of? I don't hate fish as much as I hate sharks, but I don't know. They still make me nervous.
nothingcanstop: (for flying dead bodies)

[personal profile] nothingcanstop 2020-04-15 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
...I get that. Once you associate it with something awful, it's hard to look at it the same way.
