WEEK 7

Good morning, passengers. Happy Sunday. Happy New Year.

Another week, another three gone in the case alone, not to mention Chloe earlier in the week. Even as you gain access to another floor, the ship by now must be starting to feel more empty than ever. It's been a long time by now, approaching two months.

Where do you think you'll be, in two months more time?

The clouds have begun to gather around the ship, this week.

SUNDAY | MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY

[ ooc: Welcome to week 7, everyone! Remember to turn in AC here and coins for regains over here! If you wish to get in contact with the npcs, Davy Jones is over here, and The Captain is over here! And as requested, profiles are accessible here. ]
cethflayn: (we must be careful)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-08 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, please show me how this operates. I shall defer to your judgement.

[And Filbo can tell she means that 100% honestly, because what the heck is this anyway. She watches intently as Filbo makes the stovetop go on...hopefully a low heat setting, this can take its time, it's fine.]

...But if it does not need coal or firewood, how is it powered?
ahelpingpaw: (and then I went blind for a bit)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-08 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[Low heat setting, yup]

It's gas! Probably. Gas extracted from underground and contained in these...large metallic things that maybe are in the walls or something right now? That's my guess, it's--it's one of those modern life things. It's very flammable, so, uh...never leave these open if there's no fire or else things are gonna get really bad around here.

[If the game badends because Flayn left the stovetop on and half the ship exploded people are going to be so disappointed, hah]

cethflayn: (line mouth face)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-08 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[She just. Her eyes go very wide and she nods, mouth pressed shut. Absolutely never touching one of these without someone else around to help. Accidental explosions are the last thing she wants to cause.

She's just going to...wash her hands, first, and get a bowl and then start putting the chicken pieces in it, all while sending concerned glances to the stovetop.]

...You promise it is not going to do anything bad just from making soup?
ahelpingpaw: (I could barely move!)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-08 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I promise. This is everyday stuff for many of us, it just...that's how it is!

[He smiles reassuringly]

Besides, it's good for you to at least know how all this works. I dunno if you wanna cook more in the future but if you do you won't be in the dark. It may look tough because you haven't ever seen stuff like this before, but it's all meant to make things easier!
cethflayn: (for there is so much more than sadness)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-08 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
...I just. Am worried, is all. I would not want to cause an accident.

[But we're gonna take a deep breath and be brave and go wash our hands again because it's time to season! that! chicken! Flayn takes down...salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder? Huh, you can powder onions. She takes those down and just. Does her best to shake in only a little of each. Only a little.

Probably too little.]

We can cook this in a pan, in oil, yes? If we are careful.
ahelpingpaw: (I can't make it on my own.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-08 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Y-Yes, but be careful. I'm..sure you're already aware oil and fire don't mix.

[Should he...say that's too little...?

...

...does seasoning go before or after it's cooked? He can't recall for sure. Maybe it's after]
cethflayn: (let me add my one gold piece)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
But there must be some form of fat in the pan, or the chicken will burn...maybe butter would be safer?

[Hey, Filbo, at some point when your back is turned? Flayn is definitely accidentally knocking cinnamon into the chicken. Her sleeve caught on the container and she freezes up when it happens, but...oh, maybe she can just. Scoop it out and rinse it off in the sink? Yeah! Yeah that'll work!

The chicken definitely still has plenty of cinnamon in the mix, but it won't be cinnamon challenge levels.]
ahelpingpaw: (Default)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
[Ohohoho, the good streak is done. Filbo, blissfully unaware about the cinnamon that has befallen the food, lights up more of the stovetop for a pan]

That'll be better! Tastier, probably. And as far as I know butter doesn't go up in flames if you get careless, so it really will work better!
cethflayn: (yes well hm)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
[It was bound to happen eventually...! This. This'll be fine. Right? Yeah. It'll be fine. It's fine.

Flayn is just going to go find some butter and hope Filbo doesn't notice the change in the chicken? And hey maybe it'll taste good? When she comes back, it's with some fancy herb butter.]

I found this! It should add some good flavors, right?
ahelpingpaw: (I got really hungry.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
What's--ah, the nice butter.

[Filbo glances at the herb butter like it's the first time he sees such a thing. What can he say, he never really went for the fancier options when it was about food. Hmmm...well, if it's expensive it probably is better? Maybe?]

...I...it should! It's worth a try! I mean, a little creativity is fine, right?

[Hoh, if he had been aware about the cinnamon he seriously wouldn't have said that, that's too much creativity even if it was accidental, haha]
cethflayn: (quite interesting)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Is it not better to use nice ingredients when you can?

[But uh, here's butter. Let's just uh...get this chicken going?]
ahelpingpaw: (A-and by the time I dragged myself)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
It probably is!

[Filbo watches, very clearly looking forward to this. This soup will be good, he knows it!

Expectations always are way above reality, unfortunately]

Still feeling nervous about doing all this? You're about half-done.

[He asks hoping it's an encouraging question, really]
cethflayn: (promise you shall not forget)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
A little. Mostly I am concerned about the finished product.

[I mean, it's not Thursday night, they should be fine, but. She also doesn't want to make Filbo sick on accident anyway?]

You will be honest with me if it is not good, right? I can take the criticism just fine.
ahelpingpaw: (so I tried eating this purple flower.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 02:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Of course! If that's what you want then I can do it.

[If honest criticism is what she wants then she'll get it, he thinks. It'll be all fine, he figures]
cethflayn: (A bit disappointing...)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I appreciate it.

[She's just internally prepping herself for...well, not for Filbo to insult her? He's not that kind of grumpus at all. But she is prepping for disappointment.

Do we want to fast forward to, like...cooking the actual chicken?]
ahelpingpaw: (and then I fell in a hole.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sure! Fast forward, yup]
cethflayn: (i swear on my heart)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
[So like

Flayn does her best here. She really does! And maybe the smell of cinnamon in the pan doesn't quite make itself super obvious. But she's very adamant about making sure the chicken gets cooked through completely before going into the soup? And it's.

Well, the good news is that it is cooked 100% all the way through.

The bad news is that it's as dry and tough as old leather boots.

But she puts it in anyway because keeping it from being raw was her top priority, and once it's in, she pops a lid on the pot and sags with relief.]

There...!
ahelpingpaw: (I got really hungry.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 03:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[The state of the chicken doesn't go unnoticed. Along the way Filbo had stared at the cooking chicken, wondering if maybe, just maybe he should tell her that's enough. Flayn, the chicken, it's drying up, it looks--well it's not burning but still, it, uh...

...

...maybe the chicken isn't the important part of a chicken and veggies soup.]

W-Well, the good news is that we're not getting sick with chicken, the bad news is that it, uh, it may have gone a bit overboard with the cooking? Just a bit. For future reference.

[Oh well. Too late to get that fixed, he figures it's not going to be too noticeable among the rest of the soup. Hah! As if]
cethflayn: (but if you think it is safe)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)
[:?]

Is it not important to ensure it is fully cooked?
ahelpingpaw: (A-and by the time I dragged myself)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It is! But, uh, usually it doesn't end being so...dry-looking? [How to explain it without going into the small details...cooking is partly instinct, it's hard to explain sometimes] Cooking has a lot of trying not to overdo things. Like you don't wanna do too little but also not too much either. There's a point where meat, uh, is--is cooked but also soft and juicy?

[He probably doesn't know what that point is, really, but hey, he knows it must exist!]
cethflayn: (happy teatime)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[

Oh.

Oops.]

Ah, um, well! Surely it will regain some juciness if it is in the broth for a significant amount of time. It...it will work out!
ahelpingpaw: (so I tried eating this purple flower.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
D-Don't keep the soup on the fire for a significant amount of time, that's not gonna be of help at all.

[Hmmmm...]

But maybe you're not wrong about it regaining some juciness? You never know for sure! Just--don't leave the soup cooking for too long, I'm pretty sure that's not good for it.
cethflayn: (Aha!)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I shall not - we simply need to be sure the vegetables are cooked through, yes?

[Which might take some time since the carrots are so uneven...]
ahelpingpaw: (so I tried eating this purple flower.)

[personal profile] ahelpingpaw 2021-03-09 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! That will be, uh...well I'm not sure how long it'll be, but I'm sure we can figure out along the way.

[He hopes so, at least -- he did see the carrots were rather uneven. That's going to make it harder to hit the right spot. Still, at some point Filbo does suggest to take the pot off the oven, judging perhaps it had been the right amount of time.

It almost was. The most uneven pieces -- the larger ones, especially -- aren't thoroughly cooked, and the smaller ones are pretty much mush by now, but at least most of the carrot is fine...to some extent. Better this than how it may have been if the pot had been left on the fire for longer, at least]
cethflayn: (about this size)

[personal profile] cethflayn 2021-03-09 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[This is true! And an undercooked carrot can't hurt you, nor can an overcooked one. The peas, though...are probably lost. Very mushy. But hey, Flayn tried.]

Now we ought to both have some! Let me get some bowls...

[Flayn comes back with two modest-sized bowls and two spoons, and a ladle, and starts portioning out the soup. What, you thought you'd be alone in having to eat it, Filbo?]
