WEEK 5

That's three murders now - and this last trial got more than slightly out of hand. It looks like you might be in for another tough week... or at least, maybe that's just the refusal of this place to change too much. You lose Saturday again, but maybe six-day weeks are starting to feel normal by now. Who knows? The cycle of day and night continues apace, changing so little.

Speaking of change, though, there's a new area to look through, the biggest and most complex yet. And the end of one wing of the facility, from the looks of it - though you can probably guess where more areas might start to open up.

And speaking of opening up (segues!), this week if you're out particularly late, you might sometimes see Angel out and about! So hey, maybe change is on the horizon.

Just gotta hope it's a change for the better, don't you?

Investigation

[The first thing Therion checks isn't precisely an investigation, per se, but it's definitely in the spirit of scientific inquiry (and maybe a little vengeful malice). Before turning in last night, he scattered the contents of his five buckets of plastic blocks all over the floor in Room 24, set up a tripwire at ankle height across his door with string he took from the sewing room a while ago, and balanced a tiny, folded piece of paper in the grate of any and all air vents, including in the bathroom. Once he wakes up, he moves to see if anything's been disturbed; those coins for the vending machine get in here somehow.

But then he does head off to investigate the meeting room, inch by careful inch, paying particular attention to the screen, any windows, and the south and east walls.

In the midafternoon, he ends up in the garden, resting with his back to a tree and looking more at peace than he has... well, ever. At first, he whittles idly at some workshop wood while he mulls over everything that's happened so far.

Eventually, though. If he's left alone long enough. He starts to nod off.]

[ Rin is skulking around the meeting room again today, though thankfully she isn't shouting at the screen this time. ]

What are you looking for today?

[bolderfell]

...I'll know if and when I find it.

[He's frowning, though, as he runs his fingers over the screen. Soon enough, he's looking back at her.]

I know I already asked about this. The difference between the glass used for these... [He waves at the video screen.] ...and the windows. But have any of us actually checked whether or not they are different?

[mouflon]

[ hmmm ]

Not that I've heard. I imagine the glass for the windows is a lot stronger, though — it'd be kind of a waste to use it for this, wouldn't it?

[ But of course, she's already up and coming closer to inspect the video screen, too. ]

[bolderfell]

Like the people behind this care about waste.

[Waste of glass, waste of money, waste of life... It's nothing to them.]

[mouflon]

It still seems like it would be more trouble to do that than just install a regular glass panel...

Maybe you should get that drill again.

[bolderfell]

[Holy shit, it's Christmas.]

Yeah? All right. Want to wait here while I get it?

[ Sometime deep into Therion's drowsy spell, he should get a helpful jolt from the noise of a very ripe mango hitting the trunk of a nearby tree. Like, a very nearby tree. It's closely followed by the predictable ch sort of noise she makes. ]

I didn't expect you to be the one volunteering for a punishment.

[bolderfell]

[In the same moment he jumps awake, Therion's already reaching for one of his knives. Once he registers Jasper, though, he breathes out and lets some of the tension bleed out of his shoulders.]

Jasper.

[He rubs his eyes with the back of his other hand.]

You think that's what I was doing, huh.

[...Which isn't exactly a denial.]

[hardnosed]

[ Well, that's the inverse of what usually happens. Huh. ]

That's what I saw. You. Letting your guard down.

[ She stands, not so near that her hulking shadow casts itself on Therion, but close enough to be accurately described as "looming." To be fair, Jasper usually looks like she's looming over someone or something! She's just got a looming vibe. ]

You got another explanation?

[bolderfell]

[Rather than answer, he reaches forward and stretches, then rises and brushes himself off. There's a leaf in his hair.]

You don't think it's strange, that rule?

[hardnosed]

I think it's strange he's letting her enforce it.

[ Not that that means anything, really. They've all seen what "Angel" is capable of, under different management. ]

[bolderfell]

That's not all that bothers me.

[He finds the leaf, frowns at it a moment, then lets it fall.]

We're allowed to be out at night, obviously. So why the rule against sleeping specifically? Makes murders a lot trickier to pull off.

[ Well, someone's gotta wake him up... She could go grab Daisy, but also, she doesn't want to scare him that badly. So instead, she clears her throat loudly. ]

You know, it's a beautiful place, but you probably don't want to fall asleep here.

[bolderfell]

[Mira, why. I mean, he deserves to be bullied and especially by her, but no, don't sic that stubby-legged slobberbeast on him. He startles awake just fine at her clearing her throat and at least has the shame to be embarrassed about it.]

Suppose I should thank you for that.

[He proceeds not to, of course, but in less of that I hate you, go away manner and more like a grumpy curmudgeon. Therion sits up more, puts the carving knife in his lap away, and brushes wood shavings off whatever he was working on before he started to doze.]

Didn't bring your dog this way?

[philoxenia]

You probably should.

[ ... teasing, of course, and she says it lightly enough. Working on more woodcarvings again, huh? She's curious, but she takes a seat across from him. ]

I did, but she's taking a nap near the pond. She wore herself out running around.

[bolderfell]

So you'll let sleeping dogs lie, but not me.

[Curious, is she? She's in luck, then, because he actually tosses what he's made over to her.]

Catch.

[It... oh. It looks an awful lot like a miniature stubby-legged slobberbeast. Weird how that works out, huh?]

[philoxenia]

I don't particularly want to see you get punished, Therion.

[ ... She actually says that pretty seriously, but she's caught off-guard by the toss--she manages to catch it, even if she fumbles a little. And when she studies it... oh. ]

You... made this for me?

[ That's a lot of totally-not-legos to clean up later, buddy.

But come morning, the tripwire is still in place, but all the pieces of paper have been removed and, curiously, there's some signs of disturbance in the not-legos, though notably there were absolutely no noises of anything happening.

Unfortunately, there's not much of anything to find in the meeting room, as far as secrets and mysteries are concerned. Are there any details in particular you want clarified about the space while he's looking so thoroughly? APART FROM.... THE DRILLING, SINCE I HAVE APPARENTLY HAD THIS TAG TO YOU FINISHED AND OPEN SINCE THIS MORNING, RIP ]

[He'll just parkour over the Nlegos for a week or whatever, it's fine. Also, were the paper slips removed-removed, or did they just fall down?

I trust you about the secrets and mysteries, so I'm good on the room itself, BUT! Do the windows and the video screen feel like they're made of different materials? And if he goes back out into the lounge, does the TV screen feel the same as either?]

...Therion.

[ If that's not enough to get him to stop from nodding off, would he be able to stop a certain someone from poking him? ]

[Just his name is enough to rouse him somewhat, but the second someone starts to approach, Therion snaps awake. His hand's on the hilt of a knife long before Vincent can get in range. A tense second passes.]

...Vincent.

[valentinus]

[ Just seeing him awake is enough to stop, though he'll curiously eye where the other's hand was, before allowing his gaze to land back on the man proper. ]

I assume you weren't intending on breaking that rule of his.

[bolderfell]

[He looks away, glowering at nothing, and finally releases his knife to pull at his scarf instead. Maybe that's answer enough.]

...Weird one, though. Isn't it?

[ It certainly was. Vincent wouldn't begrudge him for it either way. ]

It is. I had supposed that it was an arbitrary rule, but there might be something else to it.
