Happy New Year! ... You're still here. Looks like The Captain wasn't lying when he said the murdering is now up to you. That, or you can all live here on your own. Regardless, it's time to settle in. The days start passing much less eventfully after that first one, and, well... on it goes, huh?

There might not be a whole cruise ship to explore just yet, but there are a variety of amenities available to all of you! Who ever heard of a boring cruise ship, anyway? As the week goes on, you might even start to see some of those strange coins appear for you!

Better buckle down and get to know your fellow passengers, though, if you want to stand a chance of weathering this storm.

[Ah, this one. Yeager's at least...tolerable for the moment, so she will tip her head when she catches sight of that nod before her look goes back to her book. Really this tale is so riveting, this couple who has gone on to proclaim such a selfless love and there's still over half the book left--

And the Yeager speaks up and promptly ruins the whole mood, losing any sort of tolerability, and Plumeria promptly smacks the book shut and looks at him with a scowl.]

I wasn't asking you. [She almost looks embarrassed at being called out like this.] ...And even if you are right, I was curious to see just what kind of nonsense it would end with. I don't trust humans to write anything like this that isn't full of useless drivel.

[she says, having read several of those books already. not even to completion, either]

...What are you doing here, anyway?

[It gets a laugh out of him as he flips a page, though he doesn't seem particularly focused on the book anymore.]

That's certainly true! I really don't understand the appeal fiction to begin with...

[He shrugs and turns to address her properly, holding up the book.]

I figured it would be good to familiarize myself with the books here! I've been wondering if we should be prepared for monster attacks, but it looks as though that may not be much of a concern in this world.

[...there's a petty comment to be made here about being basic, but Plumeria's the one over here reading all of this garbage, so that's just gonna hit her for confusion damage. Dammit.]

...Well, I suppose that's good. I can't imagine dealing with monsters on top of everything else this useless ship has decided to be. It'd be far too annoying.

Ja, it is. Especially around this time of year; mermen attacks are always so difficult to deal with if you want to head out to sea! I do agree it's for the best that we aren't seeing them, but it certainly is odd...

[The concept of different worlds is still so weird.]

Mermen? Are you talking about half-human, fish-like creatures, or something else? I wouldn't have taken such creatures to be so...violent.

[She's seen her fair share of dreams about shit like that, like. She wouldn't have expected them to be so violent? ...Honestly, on second thought, you go for it mermen, kick the human's asses, but--]

Oh, no, no, not at all! The silly old legend is nothing more than that, just a legend. Mermen are very real, but they're absolutely nothing like that. They're... Hmm.

[How does he describe a merman... You know what, no, he's got a better idea. He moves over to one of the chairs and fishes out a notebook and pen from his suit pockets to get started drawing!!]

Mermen are somewhat like sharks - though they do stand upright, so perhaps that's where the idea of them being half-human came from? Regardless, they are very vicious and they don't hesitate to attack anyone sailing through their waters.

[Tah-dah! It's pretty sketchy, but actually a fairly good representation of these weird sharkmen.]

[Plumeria, for her part, does listen; interesting that such things do merely seem to be a legend. Not that Plumeria has seen any sort of creatures like that outside of dreams, but humans do always have such weird, fantastical ideas...

I swear to god if FEH makes a mermaid world at some point I'm gonna laugh--

Plumeria does look at the sketch once Yeager's done, though, and...oh dear gods, her lips quirk into something that's actually kind of amused?]

That's what they're supposed to look like? I can see where they would be a problem in a fight, but wow. I'm truly impressed about how off base humanity's impression of these creatures are.

Right? It really is funny how easy it is for silly little rumors like that to spread when they're so wrong.

Though I suppose part of that is due to how few people actually leave the major cities; it's easier to believe a tale about cute fish-girls than to hear the truth about more horrid monsters, I suppose.

[Honestly, it is impressive. Ah, the fantasies of humans...

...Still, Plumeria perks a bit when Yeager brings up that second bit.]

They don't leave all that much--why is that? I assume that these...monsters have something to do with it?

Ja, that's correct. Monsters are everywhere in Terca Lumireis; the cities are the only places that are safe, and that's because of the barriers that keep monsters out.

They're... [Hmm, how to describe monsters...] Extremely aggressive and dangerous animals, I suppose? Although many of them aren't really animal-like at all... Anyway, the point is that most humans can't hope to defend themselves against the monsters, so they remain in the cities and rarely leave.

[...Geez, what a rotten deal that sounds like.]

...That certainly explains why the people are so sheltered, I guess.

[Plumeria at least grasps it all, to say the least. Even if the animals sound distinctly like something she's heard of before, but that's a bit...huh.]

I imagine it isn't the same for you, is it? Because of Leviathan's Claw.

[She's assuming that guild means what she thinks it means and that it's kind of just. Mercenaries? Or like whatever the summoner and their merry band is doing going across countries and making messes. Either way.]

Ja, that's correct. My guild handles jobs all throughout Terca Lumireis; I only hire the best of the best and we can certainly hold our own against monsters quite well! Though that is primarily because of blastia - without that to enhance our abilities, even I'd have a difficult time against some monsters!
