Happy New Year! ... You're still here. Looks like The Captain wasn't lying when he said the murdering is now up to you. That, or you can all live here on your own. Regardless, it's time to settle in. The days start passing much less eventfully after that first one, and, well... on it goes, huh?

There might not be a whole cruise ship to explore just yet, but there are a variety of amenities available to all of you! Who ever heard of a boring cruise ship, anyway? As the week goes on, you might even start to see some of those strange coins appear for you!

Better buckle down and get to know your fellow passengers, though, if you want to stand a chance of weathering this storm.

[Jasper's trying to scrounge up some new nonfiction material that does not seem too much like things he's already read, so he keeps... noticing all the tearing...

But I continue to be sidetracked attempting to make sense of it where sense is nowhere to be found.

Hm... it may not be a bad idea to keep track of your theories and speculation, even so. Perhaps rather than discarding them outright, you ought to use a different notebook for those so you do not get them mixed up with actual facts.

Oh, I do agree that it makes very little sense based on the information to which we currently have access... and I must admit, I feel somewhat hamstrung by the lack of familiarity I have with what is even possible in this world.

[hmmm... but, well...]

Regardless, I feel that a disproportionate amount of effort must have gone into ensuring our presence here for the Captain’s initial explanation to be true, unless it happened to be part of some bizarre sacrificial ritual. Given that he has a legendary figure as his first mate, though, that is not entirely out of the question.

Agreed--the idea that he was merely going to immolate us and fail is absurd on every imaginable level, and a poor intimidation tactic at its best. However he did bring us here, the eventually stated purpose was clearly the intent from the beginning.

I think you would be right. I am, however, wondering why he would bother with the charade in the first place, or why any of this is necessary.

Unfortunately, I think the most effective thing that will allow us to learn more is if someone actually goes through with it.

I do, yes. I believe there is just enough uncertainty around whether or not the Captain can accomplish what he is threatening to do that someone is liable to snap.
