WEEK 1

Well, you've now met the brains of the operation, as well as the shockingly nice-looking young lady in charge of day-to-day business. Now all that's left is to get used to your accommodations - there's 24 other people in similar shoes to yours to meet in this building, you know! And who knows how much longer you might have them...

The daily routine in the facility quickly becomes obvious - the only way to tell time moment to moment is to check the strange device The Professor gave you, but at the same time every day the lights in and out of the facility go up, and at the same time every night they go down. Otherwise, it's almost maddening sometimes, how little happens in here. At least you have a few rooms with enough to hopefully keep you occupied. Who knows what secrets they might hold? And there's always that vending machine, if you can find something that fits in the coin slot...

MONDAY | TUESDAY | WEDNESDAY | THURSDAY

[ ooc: Welcome to Peace Week! Enjoy it while it lasts. Remember, office hours for The Professor's Assistant are over here if you're interested, while regains can be deposited over here! ]

Oooh, it's like a small yard sale! Don't mind if I do...!

[She stops when she sees that gravestone. For a moment she seems a bit confused, until her eyes light up with realization.]

Oh. I had totally forgotten about that. Thanks for the memories, Professor...?

[She doesn't really appreciate this, at all]

[Oh, hey, Shelley.]

It sounds like there's a story behind that. Is there?

[personal profile] drladysounds 2020-04-09 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I guess you could say that. I have been murdered a couple times already, and one of those times, well...I was dead for a month.

[She puts a hand on the gravestone, moving the heavy stone back and forth]

It's great for cashing in life insurance money, but dying isn't a fun time. Especially if it's bloody.

[personal profile] fivestagegod 2020-04-09 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can imagine.

[He's quiet for a moment, just sort of thinking.]

You don't have to tell me, but how'd it happen?

[personal profile] drladysounds 2020-04-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
For this one a killer snapped my neck. I had just solved a murder and he attacked me before I could spread the info for justice.

[She says that as if she was talking about a time she missed a bus, like it was nothing but a minor inconvenience]

Not a very impressive death. It was my bad, I was careless even though I was in a public place.

[personal profile] fivestagegod 2020-04-09 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
...The state of my world is pretty corrupt; my boss got caught up in some things he really shouldn't have. He got shot in front of me; I was with him until he died. It was some pretty screwed up stuff.

[He shrugs, though.]

That sort of thing's messy; no one's really impressive about it when they die, no matter how they go out. Sorry it happened to you.

[personal profile] drladysounds 2020-04-09 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I dunno why, but I'm always dodging death. Happens all the time. A plane literally crashed on my head while I was driving my car in the highway, then it all exploded. I dunno how I survived that one.

[She gets a bit grim for a moment, muttering:]

It's like death can't make up its mind!

[Which is...not really a fun thing to be thinking about, now that she realizes it. Still, she would rather not die again if she can help it]

Oh...oh no! [She gasps, horrified] Were you hurt? What could be so important and corrupt someone would want to do that?

[personal profile] fivestagegod 2020-04-09 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't hurt, no. I don't really know what was going on, but apparently my boss was the target, not me - I guess he pissed off some guy with the power to make him disappear, you know? It was weird. I'm okay, though. Spent some time with a coworker after that, he was pretty good at looking out for me.

[So yeah.]

It's probably a weird sentiment to voice out loud, but hopefully death keeps on being indecisive with you. I'd rather we not start losing people, you know?

Seems to me you got lucky. If your boss was murdered like that, then it wouldn't have been surprising if they killed any witnesses too. You being alive is a miracle.

[Shelley says all that quietly. Usually she sounds so sunny, almost carefree, but for once she is totally serious. Her expression even is a bit hard to read, until finally she shrugs, apparently having made her mind about something]

At least you had someone to rely on! And now everything is fine, right? No more mystery assassins nor corrupt people trying to order hits?

[Because really, that'd be a horrible working environment!]

Aw, look at you! How caring! Don't worry, even if I die down here I'm going to be so disappointed in myself, so you can count on that I won't let it happen!
fivestagegod: (10. do you need love)

[personal profile] fivestagegod 2020-04-09 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
[Heh. No comment on how caring he is, though the comment does get him to smile a bit; not really something he's used to hearing, he's told he's a bit blunt for most people's tastes.]

Good. I like talking to you, so it'd be a shame to cut that short - I get the feeling you've got a lot of stories worth listening to.

If you can handle the Shelley Winters brand of nonsense I'd be happy to tell you anything you want!

[She seems so flattered]

But it's got to be give and take, Dr. Birkin. It'd be great to find out more about you and your life! You seem interesting to me!

My life itself has mostly been given to my research. Virology isn't something that a lot of people tend to be really passionate about, but it's what I've been interested in since I was a kid.

But if you want to hear about stuff, then sure. I'm not opposed.

Why did you like it since you were a child? Strange career choice to want at such an early age!

[Which is impressive on its own right, really. Shelley sits on her tombstone, comfortable for listening]

Viruses are interesting organisms. The way they work, rewriting the body's cells and systems like they do... I don't know. The ability to harness that sort of mechanism always seemed like it would be able to change the world. It's something I thought about a lot when I was going through high school and university.

[...You know, before he was fourteen.]

I'm pretty big on trying to make the world a better place. It seemed like it had potential worth pursuing.

This seems like the kind of thing that just falls under 'With great power comes great responsibility'

[Change the world for better...or for worse. Knowledge is power!]

[personal profile] fivestagegod 2020-04-09 05:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. Bioweapons manufacturing is a pretty lucrative business right now, actually, if you know the right people. That sector of things has a tendency to get nasty and is best avoided, even if you don't have the morals required to keep out of it anyway.

Obviously, I'm not here to try to end the world, so I stay out of whatever they're doing and stick to trying to find ways to save people.
drladysounds: 30 (30)

[personal profile] drladysounds 2020-04-09 06:17 pm (UTC)(link)
No kidding, I once saw a bioweapon of sorts be created. It's the kinda project you do if you're morally bankrupt or just...don't know what you're getting into.

[She conveniently doesn't mention it was created with her genetic material and afterwards she was, well, an accomplice in everything, even though Shelley did it unwittingly. She's not proud of that]

Have you done any big work? Saved many lives so far?
fivestagegod: (07. if we can make it out of this alive)

[personal profile] fivestagegod 2020-04-09 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
[...It happens to the best of us, surely...]

I've just had a major project of mine come to completion lately. My life's work, if you will. So while it isn't up for distribution yet, I'm looking forward to it.

You're so getting a hospital named after you someday.

[That's got to the the greatest honor a doctor can get, she thinks]
